The Game of Thrones franchise isn’t slowing down after House of the Dragon season 1, as plenty more spinoff TV shows and books written by George R.R. Martin are on the way. House of the Dragon is the first spinoff to the hit drama Game of Thrones, with the prequel series being set approximately 200 years before the main storyline. While it took three years for new Game of Thrones content to release after the original series finale, audiences won’t have to wait as long after House of the Dragon's season 1 finale for more Westerosi stories.
Considering House of the Dragon season 1’s ratings rivaled Game of Thrones at its height (via Vulture), HBO will undoubtedly prioritize the franchise as George R.R. Martin releases more books and filmmakers pitch more successor series. While Game of Thrones came to an end in 2019, the HBO show was completed long before the book series that inspired it, so the final novels are still forthcoming. In addition to more A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the books are still expanding with prequel novellas and historical accounts of major families within the universe. Game of Thrones’ franchise is also set to continue after House of the Dragon season 1 with prequel and sequel spinoffs, animated TV shows, and future seasons of the 2022 hit series.
House Of The Dragon Season 2
House of the Dragon is officially returning for a second season on HBO. Since the season 1 finale premiered in October 2022, HBO executives expect House of the Dragon season 2 to arrive in 2024. Filming for House of the Dragon season 2 is expected to begin in spring 2023, so it’s possible that the next season will debut in the first quarter of 2024.
While House of the Dragon has yet to be renewed for season 3, author George R.R. Martin explained on his blog that the series will require four 10-episode seasons in order to do the Dance of the Dragons story justice. Showrunner Ryan Condal has also discussed the possibility of turning House of the Dragon into an anthology series following the Dance of the Dragons’ conclusion, with the TV show then exploring different eras in House Targaryen’s history (via Westeros.org). In the meantime, HBO is focused on bringing the climactic Targaryen civil war between Rhaenyra and Aegon to life in House of the Dragon season 2.
Snow
One of the most highly anticipated upcoming Game of Thrones spinoffs is Snow, the franchise’s first potential sequel series. Snow would follow protagonist Jon Snow after Game of Thrones’ ending, presumably grappling with his decision to kill Daenerys Targaryen, his exile to the Night’s Watch, and the revelation of his true identity as Aegon Targaryen, son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Author George R.R. Martin's blog revealed that Snow is being developed in collaboration with Jon Snow actor Kit Harrington and himself, but the plot and potential returning Game of Thrones cast members are under wraps. Since Snow is still in early development, it shouldn’t be expected to premiere until at least after House of the Dragon season 2.
The Sea Snake
Considering the massive appeal of House of the Dragon’s new characters, it’s hard to imagine that The Sea Snake won’t be greenlit by HBO. The Sea Snake would be a prequel to House of the Dragon about the fabled Nine Voyages of Lord Corlys Velaryon, with these travels being the source of House Velaryon’s vast wealth during the Targaryen civil war. The prequel would be set during the reign of Viserys’ predecessor King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, with Corlys navigating his ship The Sea Snake to unseen lands in Game of Thrones lore like Yi Ti and the Thousand Islands.
While Steve Toussaint portrays Corlys Velaryon in House of the Dragon, a new actor would presumably be recruited to tackle the young seafarer on his most famous voyages. The Sea Snake would also likely feature his young wife Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, who is played by Eve Best in House of the Dragon. The Sea Snake likely won’t arrive until Corlys Velaryon’s story in House of the Dragon has concluded.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms
Based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is another of Game of Thrones’ potential prequel series. The first season will adapt The Hedge Knight novella, following the hedge knight Ser Duncan and his squire Egg (the future King Aegon V Targaryen). The prequel series would be set approximately 70 years after House of the Dragon and around 100 years before Game of Thrones. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which GRRM's blog revealed may instead be titled The Hedge Knight, is set to be helmed by Steve Conrad. Since the series hasn’t been greenlit, it’s unclear when the prequel may arrive.
