All 10 Game Of Thrones Shows & Books Coming After House Of The Dragon

The Game of Thrones franchise isn’t slowing down after House of the Dragon season 1, as plenty more spinoff TV shows and books written by George R.R. Martin are on the way. House of the Dragon is the first spinoff to the hit drama Game of Thrones, with the prequel series being set approximately 200 years before the main storyline. While it took three years for new Game of Thrones content to release after the original series finale, audiences won’t have to wait as long after House of the Dragon's season 1 finale for more Westerosi stories.

Considering House of the Dragon season 1’s ratings rivaled Game of Thrones at its height (via Vulture), HBO will undoubtedly prioritize the franchise as George R.R. Martin releases more books and filmmakers pitch more successor series. While Game of Thrones came to an end in 2019, the HBO show was completed long before the book series that inspired it, so the final novels are still forthcoming. In addition to more A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the books are still expanding with prequel novellas and historical accounts of major families within the universe. Game of Thrones’ franchise is also set to continue after House of the Dragon season 1 with prequel and sequel spinoffs, animated TV shows, and future seasons of the 2022 hit series.

House Of The Dragon Season 2

House of the Dragon is officially returning for a second season on HBO. Since the season 1 finale premiered in October 2022, HBO executives expect House of the Dragon season 2 to arrive in 2024. Filming for House of the Dragon season 2 is expected to begin in spring 2023, so it’s possible that the next season will debut in the first quarter of 2024.

While House of the Dragon has yet to be renewed for season 3, author George R.R. Martin explained on his blog that the series will require four 10-episode seasons in order to do the Dance of the Dragons story justice. Showrunner Ryan Condal has also discussed the possibility of turning House of the Dragon into an anthology series following the Dance of the Dragons’ conclusion, with the TV show then exploring different eras in House Targaryen’s history (via Westeros.org). In the meantime, HBO is focused on bringing the climactic Targaryen civil war between Rhaenyra and Aegon to life in House of the Dragon season 2.

    Snow

One of the most highly anticipated upcoming Game of Thrones spinoffs is Snow, the franchise’s first potential sequel series. Snow would follow protagonist Jon Snow after Game of Thrones’ ending, presumably grappling with his decision to kill Daenerys Targaryen, his exile to the Night’s Watch, and the revelation of his true identity as Aegon Targaryen, son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Author George R.R. Martin's blog revealed that Snow is being developed in collaboration with Jon Snow actor Kit Harrington and himself, but the plot and potential returning Game of Thrones cast members are under wraps. Since Snow is still in early development, it shouldn’t be expected to premiere until at least after House of the Dragon season 2.

    The Sea Snake

Considering the massive appeal of House of the Dragon’s new characters, it’s hard to imagine that The Sea Snake won’t be greenlit by HBO. The Sea Snake would be a prequel to House of the Dragon about the fabled Nine Voyages of Lord Corlys Velaryon, with these travels being the source of House Velaryon’s vast wealth during the Targaryen civil war. The prequel would be set during the reign of Viserys’ predecessor King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, with Corlys navigating his ship The Sea Snake to unseen lands in Game of Thrones lore like Yi Ti and the Thousand Islands.

While Steve Toussaint portrays Corlys Velaryon in House of the Dragon, a new actor would presumably be recruited to tackle the young seafarer on his most famous voyages. The Sea Snake would also likely feature his young wife Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, who is played by Eve Best in House of the Dragon. The Sea Snake likely won’t arrive until Corlys Velaryon’s story in House of the Dragon has concluded.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is another of Game of Thrones’ potential prequel series. The first season will adapt The Hedge Knight novella, following the hedge knight Ser Duncan and his squire Egg (the future King Aegon V Targaryen). The prequel series would be set approximately 70 years after House of the Dragon and around 100 years before Game of Thrones. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which GRRM's blog revealed may instead be titled The Hedge Knight, is set to be helmed by Steve Conrad. Since the series hasn’t been greenlit, it’s unclear when the prequel may arrive.

    Ten Thousand Ships

Also potentially on the way for HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel shows is Ten Thousand Ships. The series surrounds Princess Nymeria of the Rhoynar gathering her people onto 10,000 ships in search of a new home after being defeated by the Valyrian dragonlords. The Rhoynar's journey sees them navigate various areas in the Game of Thrones world before settling on Dorne, establishing them as the ancestors of House Martell and the Westerosi Dornishmen. George R.R. Martin's blog confirmed that showrunner Amanda Segel has submitted several drafts of Ten Thousand Ships’ pilot script.

    The Golden Empire

Game of Thrones has already produced animated snippets of Westerosi history in the series’ DVD extras, but The Golden Empire would mark the franchise’s first feature animated TV show. The Golden Empire is another prequel that would explore the lands of Yi Ti in Essos, which are inspired by Imperial China. Yi Ti is known for its valuable treasures and societal advancements, with this area only being referenced in Game of Thrones on rare occasions. So far, there are no details on when The Golden Empire could move forward into production, but George R.R. Martin's blog confirmed it's in development.

    The Winds Of Winter

The fifth installment of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series, A Dance with Dragons, was released in 2011, which means that book readers have been waiting over a decade for The Winds of Winter. The sixth book of the series is set to confirm the survival of Jon Snow and explore storylines that somewhat align with Game of Thrones seasons 5 and 6. Martin confirmed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in October 2022 that the long-delayed Winds of Winter is 75 percent complete, so it’s possible that the long-awaited novel will arrive before House of the Dragon season 2.

    A Dream Of Spring

Despite such a long wait, The Winds of Winter isn’t the end of the main storyline that Game of Thrones adapted. Martin revealed that A Song of Ice and Fire will likely be completed with A Dream of Spring, which will expose many key differences between Game of Thrones’ character endings and those of their book counterparts. Considering it took well over a decade for The Winds of Winter to arrive, A Dream of Spring may not be published until after House of the Dragon’s Targaryen civil war storyline has ended.

    Fire & Blood Volume 2

If House of the Dragon indeed turns into an anthology series, it will likely require the second volume of Fire & Blood to be released first. Fire & Blood (2018) is a historical account of House Targaryen’s reign in Westeros beginning with Aegon the Conqueror, which is told from the perspectives of somewhat unreliable narrators. Unlike Game of Thrones’ book series, the section of Fire & Blood that House of the Dragon is based on is complete, so there are no concerns about the TV show surpassing the source material.

However, Fire & Blood Vol. 1 only covers the first 150 years of the Targaryen reign. The book ends after the Targaryen civil war and the first few years of the rule of King Aegon III Targaryen, the son of House of the Dragon’s Rhaenyra Targaryen. As such, Fire & Blood Vol. 2 still has approximately 150 more years’ worth of Targaryen history to cover, depending on whether it concludes with the Mad King Aerys’ reign or the death of Daenerys Targaryen. Martin's blog revealed that he won’t prioritize Fire & Blood Vol. 2 until after The Winds of Winter is completed, so it may be several more years before the book arrives.

Tales Of Dunk & Egg Books

George R.R. Martin has already published three novellas in his Tales of Dunk and Egg series since 1998 but plans to write several more. Martin has suggested writing anywhere between six and twelve more Dunk and Egg books in order to explore the entire lives of the two main characters, Ser Duncan the Tall and the future King Aegon V Targaryen. It’s unclear whether HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms prequel series would arrive before or after Martin finishes his planned novellas.

In 2015, Martin's blog revealed he has specific ideas for at least six upcoming novellas under the working titles The She-Wolves of Winterfell, The Village Hero, The Sellsword, The Champion, The Kingsguard, and The Lord Commander, with several more planned in between. However, Martin won’t be working on Game of Thrones’ future Dunk and Egg novellas until after The Winds of Winter. Although this suggests a long wait, it’s possible that one of the stories could be published before the House of the Dragon series ends.
