Seriously, just start small. If you start with full cross-fit classes five days a week, you'll burn out before you even start. Begin with short walks. Get out and get some air each day. After a week or so, you'll find you have a little more energy. Increase the walks, and slowly work your way up to hitting the gym or some classes.

There's also, seriously, a bike-powered laptop charger. Use that, and you'll get some exercise in while you work on your computer.

I went from a rigorous job in the gas and oil industry to an I.T. desk job and gained some lbs/kgs

It sucks but I am happy as ever spending more time with my family and doing what I like to do. Walks and eating healthy are major factors in my life to stay 'decent'

I try to go for a short walk every day. I'd like to be able to jog regularly someday but right now it really tires me out even after a really short time. Also trying to cut down on snacks

This thread is a bit old, but this is a sticky right? Hopefully nobody cares about me posting here. I think people need to learn the basic scene behind losing weight and gaining muscle, and a bit about their natural metabolism rate. To begin with, basically how many calories your body burns with you doing absouletely nothing is called your metabolism resting rate. Let's say everyday you burn 2500 calories naturally, to lose weight you'll need to eat less calories than you naturally burn off or exercise to make up for it.

    3500 calories = 1 pound
    3500/7 = 500 calories
Lose 500 calories a day, and you'll lose a pound a week. Very easy to do.

Just drinking water only should help most people lose a pound a week, assuming they also don't pig out. To gain muscle is different, you need to cause a thing called micro tears in your muscles. Basically, when you exercise near the max you can do and feel sore then you're doing it right. After you cause micro tears in your muscle, you need to rebuild it with protein and good rest. I'd recommend getting whey protein, my favorite is Optimum Nutrition and their vanilla version. The reason why I recommend that is because there's heavy metals in a lot of other whey protein, or they don't really give the said amount it says on the back. One VERY important thing to remember is that each pound of muscle you put on burns 40 calories a day naturally, meaning once you get swole you'll be able to drink soda and eat whatever without gaining weight.

And on a final note, sorry if ranty I type fast and don't type check. For a total beginner, pick up a program called Couch to 5K. If you follow the program 3 days a week, you'll be able to run a 5K in 8-9 weeks. You should alternate days you aren't doing the program with arms.

    Monday - 5K program
    Tuesday - Arms
    Wed - 5K program
    Thursday - Arms
    Friday - 5K program

This is a surefire way to lose weight and get in shape. I was 260lbs at one point, now I'm fairly lean and joining the military soon. Just make sure to put down soda and other sugary things, remember most habits are formed in 3 weeks. Stay true to drinking only water and eating healthy, and soon it'll be natural.

I wouldn't consider myself a "geek", but maybe someone who spends more hours on the pc than the average.
However I have always been active doing sports, some on a pretty high level, so I have never been out of shape.
In the present 2 years I have worked at a physical demanding job, and strength trained next to it, which have given me amazing results
The secret ingredient is sleep and calories in v calories used (and probably also genetics, in my case at least)

I've dealed a lot of years with overuse of Soda, even filled with sugar or diet soda.
At the moment I'm drinking around 2 liters diet soda, in a timeroom of 3PM - 11 PM I'm trying to swap it out with water soon.
Also has to exercise way more than I do now, since I've gotten fatter over many years of lazynes and fatty foods.

Get yourself a few exercise balls, exercise workout book, resistance bands, and I've been losing weight steadily since. Got the idea when I was in physical therapy for my knees. Was doing therapy 3 times a week and I noticed after 6 weeks of therapy that my church pants were suddenly 3 inches smaller than they were before. If you have some weights at home, you can use those to make workouts even harder.
