It’s not a straight forward question to answer as it depend on what your abilities are and what you’re looking to do. Is it just to get your ratio up or is it for seeding long term?

With a dedicated server all the resources of that server are for your use only i.e memory, cpu, storage, bandwidth, IP address etc. So the same specification server would be much fast deployed as a dedicated server (only you on it) than if it had been used by a seedbox provider to support 4,5,6 etc shared users. The dedicated server will generally be more expensive although you can get cheap ones Kimsufi (limited spec and bandwidth). The main question with the Dedicated server is are you able to, and are you comfortable with, configuring and support it. You really need to be running a linux server distribution (yes it’s possible to run windows on the server but don’t) so you will be using Linux command line (no GUI). You will have to choose your OS typically Ubuntu server is popular and setup the install environment and configure it from scratch. There are some very good guides on how to do this and also some install scripts to do it all for you (available from GitHub). If you are already a linux command line guru then yes go for it. With a Dedi you have the full flexibility to run whatever you want. Some people for example run plex server with multiple streams to friends and family as well as rtorrent which you can do if the server is powerful enough. Remember any issues you have are down to you to fix but you have the flexibility to run what you want.

With Shared servers generally the more you pay the better the spec and the fewer users on the server. The server is preconfigured for you and any issues you have you can raise a support ticket and generally it’s fixed within 24 hours. The resources of the server are shared between the users this is may not be so much of a problem for memory, CPU and storage if it’s specified correctly but it is with bandwidth particularly if there is a heavy user on the same server. All the users on the server share the same internet pipe which can become congested with one or two heavy uploaders. It’s the luck of the draw as to who is on your server but one or more heavy users can have a very big dent on your server’s upload and download performance. Also all the users on your shared server will usually have the same IP address. Theoretically that could be a plus if a copy right troll wanted to know who with that IP address was downloading a particular file as it would become harder to identify the individual (but we would like to think the seedbox provider would ignore such requests, plus you will be on private trackers which should drastically reduce the threat). It could also be a disadvantage if a rogue user on the same server starts getting the IP blacklisted for whatever reason.

    My recommendation
Starting off use a seedbox from a good provider (see the reviews as not all seedbox providers are the same)
Once you are comfortable using a seedbox with rtorrent or deluge etc. and you what to go to the next step grab a spare PC or use a VM. Have a go at running through an rtorrent install guide. Yes you will make more mistakes and start pulling your hair out but you will learn far more than using a script. See if you can configure it to get the web front end up and working as well as SFTP server so you can transfer files to and from it (no need to have any torrents running on it at this stage as it’s just a learning exercise). Once you start to get familiar with chown, chmod, apt-get etc you can then look at renting a dedicated server.

    I have both.
