Avira is not bad.

Avast is pretty great for being free. You can also get a paid version, but the free one is already great so not really required at all.

eset smart security or kaspersky is the best

I use Kaspersky. It is fast and good. I have used AVG, it is also good but heavy.

If you must pay then get Kaspersky or Bit-Defender (I find Kaspersky to be lighter on the sytem)

i dont know whats the best freeware antivirus but i do use avast. it saved my laptop many times already. so far so good! hehehe!

Avira in the last reviews from the av-test got a very positive feedback, it seems better than the older versions.

AVG for for years.No significant problem so far.

I used to love avast and I felt very security, never really had a problem. But it was slightly intrusive, with different popups and what not. Testing out bitdefender now and it rarely hassles me about anything. Absolutely love it.

Really handy program to install for my parents too. Avast drove my mother crazy with all the popups, making her very uncertain.

I use Avira. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a malware removal tool.
