Hulu's 'The Handmaid's Tale' and Netflix's 'Alias Grace' dominated on the TV side.
In a repeat of his Oscar triumph, Paul Austerberry was hailed Saturday night for best production design in a feature film for his work on The Shape of Water by the Directors Guild of Canada at its 2018 DGC Awards in Toronto.
Austerberry earlier took home the trophy for production design at the 2018 Academy Awards for his work on director Guillermo del Toro's Cold War fairy tale, which was shot in and around Toronto.
Shape of Water also earned best picture editing, feature film and best sound editing, feature film honors at the DGC Awards. The fantasy romance about a mute woman who falls in love with an underwater creature garnered the best picture statuette at the 2018 Academy Awards.
The DGC also bestowed Miranda de Pencier the best director prize for her work on The Grizzlies.
On the TV front, Canadian-produced or -shot series that stream on U.S. digital platforms dominated the awards show.
Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale earned Kari Skogland the best drama director prize and Christopher Donaldson the best TV picture editing honor, while the Netflix miniseries Alias Grace garnered Mary Harron the best director trophy in the TV movie or miniseries category, which also saw Arvinder Greywal win for best production design and David Whansby pick up best picture editing honors.
The DGC Awards, which also saw special prizes handed out to Norma Bailey, Alanis Obomsawin and Vic Sarin, were hosted by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee of the Canadian comedy Kim's Convenience.
