The first full trailer for FX’s Mayans M.C. has arrived, offering up a glimpse at how JD Pardo’s Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes fits into the violent world of a Southern California motorcycle club, and how different life is as a prospect. The spinoff from the network’s wildly successful Sons of Anarchy has been in the works for some time now, with Kurt Sutter returning to TV for the first time since the medieval hack-and-slash series The Bastard Executioner called it a day after one season. And now, after a series of short teasers that went all-in on figurative depictions of the club leaving death and chaos in their wake, the new series is finally ready to show some actual footage.

The new trailer is chock full of familiar MC imagery, including a look at former SoA cast member Emilio Rivera reprising his role as Marcus Alvarez, who makes an example of EZ’s prospect status. To its credit, though, the trailer makes quick work of some necessary exposition with regard to Ezekiel’s past as a former Stanford golden boy who, through some twist of fate, wound up serving time in prison before seeking a place with the Mayans.

The rest of the trailer shows how easily Sutter and series co-creator Elgin James have slipped back into the violent, sometimes darkly comedic world made popular by Jax Teller and SAMCRO. The mischievous attitude struck by some members of the club is in sharp contrast to their violent actions, most notably when it appears a shrink-wrapped dead body is dropped haphazardly into an underground bunker, with the club member responsible simply offering up a halfhearted “My bad” in response.

Like the series it was spun off from, it appears Mayans M.C. will waffle between almost gleeful depictions of violent men behaving badly and more serious explorations of their personal lives, as seen in the flashbacks of Ezekiel with Emily, a young woman from his past played by Sarah Bolger. Emily seems to be as interested as anyone in how EZ wound up on the wrong side of the law, which, presumably, has led him down the path he’s currently on.

Rounding out the trailer is a glimpse at Edward James Olmos, who speaks softly, telling EZ, “You’re in this now, son. There’s no getting out,” but also carries a big boom stick. The Reyes family discussion suggests there might be more to EZ than meets the eye, a notion bolstered by some of his fellow Mayans questioning whether or not they can trust the new prospect before the trailer switches to a telling shot of the Reyes boys looking on knowingly. With the series set to premiere in September, it won’t be long before FX is back in the violent world of Sons of Anarchy, and before viewers learn more about EZ and his chosen MC.

Mayans M.C. premieres Tuesday, September 4 on FX.
