Gal Gadot recently said that she believes her Wonder Woman could beat Henry Cavill’s Superman in a fight. The actress made her highly-anticipated debut as Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice – the director’s follow-up to Man of Steel – last year. It also happened to be the live-action debut of the character on the big screen. It took 75 years, but it finally happened, and now Gadot will be reprising her role in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman this year.
Since Wonder Woman is a solo film, Diana won’t be accompanied by any other superheroes, nor will she have to fight any of them. That has been a common thread recently (heroes fighting other heroes), in particular with last year’s Batman V Superman and Captain America: Civil War. Fans had debated who would win in a fight between Batman and Superman, long before Snyder’s movie came out. It’s an age-old question in the comic book world, yet it’s not the only pairing that interests people. Case in point: if Superman had fought Wonder Woman, who would win?
Gadot has been busy doing press for Wonder Woman, and she was recently asked if she thinks her character could beat Cavill’s Superman in a fight. Here’s what she told Warner Bros.’ WBTV Brazil (she speaks about the hypothetical fight at the 0:16 mark in the video above):
“It would be a tight one, but yes.”
Diana Prince and Clark Kent have been many things to one another: friends, allies, lovers, and even enemies. When characters like them have been around for as long as they have, their stories – and relationships – tend to change quite often. There have been several occasions in which they were pitted against one another. If that were to happen on the big screen, casual moviegoers may believe that Superman would win easily. While he’s technically one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe, he has actually lost to Wonder Woman before (and he isn’t the only one to have done so).
At this point, it’s safe to say that moviegoers have had their fair share of hero vs. hero movies and are looking forward to a different chapter in the DC Extended Universe. With Wonder Woman, audiences will see the origin of Diana Prince, as she accompanies Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) to the front lines of World War I. Honoring her sacred duty to protect mankind, Diana will battle the villain Ares, the God of War, as well as Doctor Poison (Elena Anaya) and General Erich Ludendorff (Danny Huston). The review embargo lifted last night and the Wonder Woman critical reception has been very much positive so far. After that film hits theaters, all eyes will turn to this year’s Justice League movie, which both Superman and Wonder Woman will appear in.
