Clarence Thomas Documentary in the Works From Manifold Productions
The film 'Created Equal' from Conservative filmmaker Michael Pack will include the Supreme Court Justice's recollections of his confirmation battle with Anita Hill.
Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas is reportedly working with producers from Manifold Productions, led by Conservative filmmaker Michael Pack, on a documentary intended to release in 2020 and to be titled Created Equal.
Thomas has apparently agreed to take part in a film that looks back over his life, and career, including his 1991 Senate confirmation hearings where he battled with sexual harassment accuser Anita Hill.
The production company released the following statement on the company's website, "Although Clarence Thomas remains a controversial figure, loved by some, reviled by others, few know much more than a few headlines and the recollections of his contentious confirmation battle with Anita Hill. Yet, the personal odyssey of Clarence Thomas is a classic American story and should be better known and understood."
Hill testified that Thomas repeatedly sexually harassed her and he was nonetheless confirmed as a Supreme Court justice.
Manifold Productions is led by filmmaker and president Michael Pack, a former CEO of the Conservative think tank Claremont Institute, and publisher of its Claremont Review of Books. Pack earlier executive produced Conservative-themed documentaries like Rediscovering Alexander Hamilton, Rediscovering George Washington and Inside the Republican Revolution: The First 100 Days.
The production company on its website says Created Equal is intended for national broadcast on PBS "and ongoing educational use in classrooms."
Manifold promises a rags-to-riches story about the American Supreme Court justice. "His life began in extreme poverty in the segregated South, and moved to the height of the legal profession, as one of the most influential justices on the Supreme Court," it says in its statement.
The company also promises to strive for balance in its account of Thomas: "We intend to make a film that will tell the Clarence Thomas story truly and fully, without cover-ups or distortions."
News of a Clarence Thomas documentary follows former Vice President Joe Biden during his recently-announced presidential bid for the 2020 Democratic nomination coming under scrutiny for his own role in the Anita Hill controversy, and allegations that he had inappropriately touched several women over the years.
It also follows fellow U.S. Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg becoming the subject of her own documentary, Betsy West's and Julie Cohen's RBG, from CNN Films and which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.
In 2016, Thomas was portrayed by actor Wendell Pierce in the TV movie Confirmation, in which Kerry Washington took on the role of Hill and Greg Kinnear played Biden.
