Marvel's 'Hawkeye' Series Targets Hailee Steinfeld
The actor would play Kate Bishop, protege to Jeremy Renner's Avenger.
Hawkeye is targeting Hailee Steinfeld. The actor is in early talks to star in the Disney+ series opposite Jeremy Renner. She would play Kate Bishop, a young hero trained by Clint Barton (Renner) to fight crime with the help of a bow and arrow.
In the comics, Kate Bishop debuted in 2005's Young Avengers No. 1 and was created by Wonder Woman screenwriter Allan Heinberg and artist Jim Cheung. She started off as an amateur athlete who later joined the Young Avengers, a group of teen heroes inspired by the Avengers. Known for her sarcastic personality, Bishop quickly became a fan favorite, and went on to star in the critically acclaimed 2012 Hawkeye comic book, which saw her train under Barton. She eventually took up his mantle, toplining the 2017 Hawkeye series.
Steinfeld, who earned an Oscar nomination and was launched to stardom with 2010's True Grit, is already starring in a series for a rival streaming service, Apple. Sources tell THR that Apple has not cleared the actress for anything as of yet as she is attached to star in Dickinson. That show — which is not a close-ended limited series — will likely be among the first originals to be included in Apple's forthcoming streaming service.
Steinfeld also headlined the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee last year, and she is also already a member of the Marvel family. The actor voiced Spider-Gwen in the Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is part of Sony's separate universe based on Spider-Man characters.
Hawkeye, which is expected to bow in fall 2021, is one of multiple Disney+ series in the works at Marvel Studios starring its big-screen talent, including Falcon & The Winter Soldier, WandaVision and Loki. Marvel is also going to introduce new heroes to headline future Disney+ shows, with She-Hulk, Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel all in the works.
Former Mad Men writer Jonathan Igla will write and executive produce Hawkeye.
While a number of Marvel's movie stars are appearing in its shows, Steinfeld marks the biggest new addition to its Disney+ roster to date.
