Boston Celtics Docuseries Set At HBO From ‘30 For 30′ Producers
Production is underway on Celtics City, a multipart documentary series on the 18-time NBA champion Boston Celtics from HBO Sports Documentaries and 30 for 30 co-creators Bill Simmons and Connor Schell. Directed by Emmy winner Lauren Stowell, the series will premiere on HBO and will stream on Max in 2025.
Celtics City chronicles the history, cultural impact and extraordinary tale of the NBA’s winningest and most storied franchise, the Boston Celtics, the reigning NBA champions. The series contains extensive, never-before-seen archives and more than 80 interviews of past and present Boston Celtics legends – from Bob Cousy and Larry Bird to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
Produced by HBO Sports Documentaries, Ringer Films and Words + Pictures, the series will reunite exec producers Simmons and Schell for the first time since they created the iconic 30 for 30 series.
“There’s no story quite like the Boston Celtics. Everything went right for 40 years, then nothing went right, then suddenly, things started going right again,” said Simmons, executive producer of Ringer Films. “But beyond the 18 titles and all the legends and memories, the team’s connection to the city and almost a century of American history was the most compelling piece for us. This story is bigger than basketball, and yet, it’s everything you ever loved about basketball, too.”
Added Stowell, director, Words + PIctures: “The Celtics are more than a basketball team. They’re a symbol of resilience, unity, and success. While chapters of the team’s story have been told, the full scope of their cultural impact has never been fully explored. Making this documentary was an incredible opportunity to delve into generations of legendary personalities, defining struggles, and extraordinary triumphs that have left a lasting mark not only on the game of basketball, but on the city of Boston and the spirit of America.”
