    Hetzner Server as Seedbox Help!

Hello! I am thinking of getting one of those i7 2 x 3 TB Hetzner server, for only €26.05++ only. One problem is its on System Rescue mode and i when install ubuntu it will be kinda challenging for me setting it up. But im sure i will find a way, but to save up time i need some of your help.

    Is the following possible:
    1. Using it as seedbox by installing rutorrent.
    2. Using plex on it.
    3. Installing Ubuntu MATE on it so it will be easier for me cause i will have a GUI
    4. How long does this usually take to set up, you can put my ubuntu knowledge to 4/10.
    5. Is Ubuntu 16.04 the best OS for this??

Any suggestions / opinions about this is welcome. Please let me know.

    To answer your questions:

    1. Yes, it is possibe to use it as a seedbox and to install rtorrent + rutorrent on it.
    2. You can use Plex on it.
    3. You can quickly deploy an OS from the Hetzner control panel. You can choose different OS's. You can choose from CentOS, Debian, OpenSUSE and Ubuntu. I don't know about Ubuntu MATE. But because it is a dedicated server you can deploy whatever OS you like.
    4. You have scripts for some stuff, but general Linux (command line, etc) knowledge is recommended. And of course there are search engines.
    5. Ubuntu is a good choose, however I see more seedbox providers running Debian on their boxes (for e.g. Feral Hosting).

When you go with Hetzner, don't use public trackers. Hetzner is based in Germany and the German copyright law is quite strict.
But when you just use private trackers, you're ok.

If you need some more info, just let me know.

Google "seedbox from scratch". There are some ready made scripts out there still maintained and they work perfectly

@sr71 @masonos i've read that hetzners send DMCA letter if i download from public tracker, so i will definitely only use it on private. But! lets say i use IPT? is it safe to use it there, cause IPT is somewhat "semi-private" according to reddit, so idk if thats safe to use there. Also do you know any other trackers that are flagged as "semi-private"

    Thanks for your replies guys

IPT is not semi private to my knowledge and i believe there will be no problem using your seedbox there.
Semi-private is demonoid which i would avoid completely as it is full of malware.

I really know nothing about hetzners so if anyone has experience with them will help you more.

Some say IPT is semi-private because you can buy your way in for 20 USD.

If you torrent from IPT using a Hetzner box, you're just fine.

I have been using Hetzner servers for the past 4 years. So, I guess I will be able to help you out.

    a) First up - Decide the script you want to use. There are 2 scripts: 1) Quickbox, ) RTINST

If you go with Quickbox, then first, please follow this particular tutorial to setup the server for Ubuntu installation - hetzner-server-setup
Once you have Ubuntu installed, next step is to install the script. For that just go through the instructions given here - QB-install. Just scroll down to the "How to install" section. With Quickbox you will have a GUI dashboard. There are a lot of options, which you can configure.

If you go with the RTINST script, see here for details - RTINST-GITHub
I prefer this script, as it is more stable, and provides most of the features you need. This script does not provide a control dashboard.

Both of these scripts will install rtorrent along with ruTorrent Web GUI, Set up autodl-irssi, configure jailed FTP accounts. For additional apps, you need to install them separately.

    b) Once the seedbox is setup, you can install Plex. There are a lot of good guides out there. Check these two guides - 1) Plex-Official-Install, 2) HTPC-Plex

Once you have plex installed, you might want to integrate it with ACD. So, look into this particular link - PlexACD-Install

    c) For GUI access to the server, you will need to install VNC server on the hetzner box. And from your remote machine you need to use a VNC viewer (TightVNC, TigerVNC) to connect to a GUI session. Some people use X2Go, but I prefer VNC.

    d) Provided you know how to copy-paste stuff in proper places, and you know how to use putty or any SSH terminal this should not take more than 1 hour.

    e) As of now, Ubuntu 16.04 is the way to go. The scripts support it fully.

Now, a few points about Hetzner - 1) Bandwidth restrictions are linked to the price of your server. Please visit this link for clear details - Hetzner-Traffic. You can have additional bandwidth as well. 2) Do NOT use public trackers. There will be a very high possibility of getting into trouble. 3) You can use IPT without any issue on Hetzner. 4) If you are in the US, peering from Hetzner to your local ISP is known to be a little slow. So, you have to adjust with that. 5) Many people tell that you cannot build a buffer with Hetzner but that is not true. 6) You have to provide ID proof to Hetzner so your privacy is out of the window.
