Huawei Mate 9: 20MP, 12MP rear Leica cameras; battery charges to 50% of capacity in 5

Earlier today we told you that the chipset expected to be found inside the Huawei Mate 9, the Kirin 960, will be unveiled on October 19th. This is a chip that is designed by Huawei and produced by a third party manufacturer like TSMC. Besides the date that the Kirin 960 will be announced, some other interesting new rumors popped up today regarding the next phone in the Mate series.

First, there is speculation that the Mate 9 will feature a dual camera setup in back. Like the rear cameras on the Huawei P9, the optics on the Mate 9 will be manufactured by Leica. One camera is expected to be 20MP while the other will weigh in at 12MP. An 8MP front-facing camera will handle selfies and video chats.

All of these specs are coming from Weibo posts. which means that they need to be taken with a grain of salt. That includes the reported Super Charge Technology on the phone that will allegedly charge the battery to 50% of capacity in only five minutes. Rumors about the size of the display have been scarce, but the latest one calls for a 5.9-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920.

We expect that there will be three variants of the Huawei Mate 9. One with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of flash storage will be priced as low as $480 USD, and will be available in three colors. Another with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of native storage will come in five hues, priced at the equivalent of $585 USD. And the premium model with 6GB of RAM will be equipped with 256GB of native storage and will fetch a price of $705 USD.

The Huawei Mate 9 should be released some time in the middle of next month.

Seems like a great phone. I do not understand however, why people are buying phones with 256gb of storage? What are they holding there? :-)

Well if the phone doesn't come with an microsd slot, storage space is important. For program installations and photos/videos. Some people keep movies and/or tv shows on their phones as well to watch while commuting to work. And let's not forget a couple of backups at 7/8 GB each, and a couple of custom roms for flashing another 3/4 GB.

Try working with a 16GB phone where 10GB is the OS, not much space left there
