The track appears in 'Behind The Curve'

Real Estate have denied giving permission to filmmakers to use their song ‘Horizon’ in a flat Earth documentary.

Behind The Curve is available to watch on Netflix. A synopsis on the streaming platform reads: “Meet the growing, worldwide community of theorists who defend the belief that the Earth is flat while living in a society who vehemently rejects it.”

One fan tweeted about the song’s inclusion in the documentary, writing: “I wonder how @Realestateband feel about having their song play in this new flat earth doc on @netflix.”

The band responded: “Haven’t seen the movie yet. Found out about our song being in it last night from a friend, and while I do think it’s a pretty funny recontextualization to use our song Horizon in a doc about flat earthers, no one in the band approved it.”

Caroline Clark, the film’s producer, has since confirmed the song had been licensed from both the publishing and label arms of Domino, to whom Real Estate are signed.

‘Horizon’ appeared on the group’s album ‘Atlas’, which was released in 2014. The band last released a record in 2017 with ‘In Mind’.

The album was Real Estate’s first without founding member Matt Mondanile, who left the band after he was accused of emotional abuse and mistreating women. In a statement issued in 2018, Mondanile apologised for his behaviour but said he didn’t “agree with the social isolation caused by public shaming on the internet.”
