Help with dedi choices and set-up

I finally decided to go dedi because I can't handle how unstable shared servers can get. I'm currently having terrible performance on The SeedBox Company for instance and they simply won't help.

After a bit of research I found this i3-530 plan which is within my budget (€20):

I have had a bit of experience with linux (ubuntu/ubuntu based) on personal computers so I guess I'd be able to install and manage most stuff like a Plex installation as I already did this under Linux Mint, for instance. But I bet I'd have a lot of trouble with the initial set-up. I'd need VNC access to do this stuff as I know very little about command line.

So I wonder if someone would be able to help me initially just so I'm headed in the right direction.

Also, if you guys have any recommendations for dedicated plans, let me know, I don't know much about them. This plan seemed to offer the best value because of the Raid 1 1TB + 1gbps network. No way I'd get this kind of features/performance on a managed/shared box at this price, am I right?

What would the control panel be for?

setup through the command line is pretty easy.

you can follow this guide for ubuntu/debian: http://forums.rutorrent.org/?topic=256.0

there are also some auto setup scripts available for installing seedboxes, but i prefer to do it manually - especially if you do not know linux that well coz this will help you to learn more and you'll have a better idea what to do if something goes wrong.

if you get stuck with linux, a quick google search always has more than enough info

If I get any debian-based distro and I first login through SSH could I simple apt-get VNC and then get to the desktop as I am used to? Or would it be more complicated?

server installs are usually headless, i.e. there is no gui installed. you will need to install a gui first and then install a vnc server

With a bit of googling I found this instructions for Debian:

# apt-get install aptitude tasksel

# tasksel install gnome-desktop --new-install

So... Unless something goes wrong, I'd install a GUI like Gnome through apt-get like shown above, then VNC and that's it? (it sounds too easy XD)

BTW guys, I was thinking in going with this script. Sounds legit to you?
The OS is Ubuntu 14.04 and the provider is OneProvider.

I'm afraid of trying it out and then messing up with the OS... But I guess the chances are slim?

EDIT:

I tried this script on a ubuntu server 14.04 bridged vmware installation and I confirmed that the rtorrent works well. Deluge doesn't though and that's what I would be using. Does anyone have a more reliable Deluge script?
