Mini form factor systems that can handle small jobs at low cost are spreading and new alternatives for Raspberry Pi are coming.
Geniatech has launched two new mini systems in the Raspberry Pi form factor. Equipped with Amlogic processors, the XPI-S905X2 and XPI-S905X3 come with 4K video playback capability, as detected by CNX Software.
Depending on the model you choose, the cards feature quad-core Cortex A53 and A55 CPUs and a Mali G31 MP2 GPU. On the memory side, a choice can be made between 1 GB and 2 GB. Storage requirements are met via up to 32GB eMMC flash or a Micro SD slot.
Mini PCs are very similar to the Raspberry Pi 3, with a size of 85 x 56 mm. Again, the connection ports are similar, with a single HDMI output, three USB 2.0 ports and a single USB 3.0 (micro-USB). Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are optional, or you can use the built-in gigabit Ethernet RJ45.
All new devices can play 4K60 video in VP9 Profile 2, HEVC MP-10, ACS2-P2 and H.264 AVC formats, while the most powerful (with S905X4 chipset) AV1 can handle 4K120.
A power adapter and passive cooling fin are included in the box. Geniatech's mini form factor cards use Android 9 as the operating system, but it is possible to install and run Linux. Cards are available in limited quantities from the Geniatech store.
