I use VLC & Combined Community Codec Pack though I would like an alternative for VLC because with every update, the player's performance decline.

I use VLC player for all movies, very good I've found. That fact that it's cross-platform is a huge help too

Most of the time I will use dlna to run the mkv file to the TV. There will be times where the TV is unable to play the 1080p movie.
Then I would have to plug the computer into the tv with HDMI and use VLC to play the movies.
