VLC aslong as you set things up right (use yadiffx2!!) unless you're watching a movie that needs subs in which case Kantaris is DEFINITELY! the best, i've searched around so hard looking for best players for subs and kantaris has came out top from every one i tested as it overlays subs ontop of video really nicely, can turn horrible looking subs on regular players into smooth / clean edged quality ones.

VLC is alright, but I don't like it because subtitle rendering is horrific, the filter chain isn't transparent, and it refuses to use external filters even if you try to set it to do so. No color calibration included. Subjectively, the interface is also ugly. Funny, because VideoLAN is largely responsible for x264.

Anyway, from my experience the best simple solution is to use SMPlayer2. Link: Here

A more thorough solution, which is what I use, involved Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPC-HC) SVN builds, combined with LAV filters using mad-vr as the renderer. You can find downloads for both LAV and mad-vr on doom9. xhmikosr's builds for MPC-HC have worked well for me: MPC-HC Nightly Builds. An outdated but still relevant guide based off of nand's original can be found here: Advanced MPC-HC Setup Guide - with madVR + LAV Filters (v1.1) - Forums - MyAnimeList.net. I don't agree with everything this poster has written, but it's pretty good. Namely, madFLAC is not needed, and encouraging the use of CUVID/QuickSync even if the user doesn't need it is questionable. Namely, hardware acceleration cannot render 10-bit. With HEVC coming, this will be a moot point. I believe there are other issues, but I can't recall them right now.
