I have an htpc running xbmc 24/7. No need for codecs and it has the best looking interface any media player has to offer. It also scrapes media for images/info/ratings/trailers etc. Best part, its free!

Splash Pro works great and is worth checking out, VLC and windows media player are mainstays, and Universal Viewer is good to have around too. I never found Core or any others that are out there to be worth while.

Not familiar w the codecs that are out there.

Splash HD because it can use hardware acceleration, and XBMC for HTPC
