Surviving the Aftermath will be releasing on the Xbox One in late 2020 and also be a part of the Xbox Game Preview program for players who want to experience the game's early development later this year. The first entry in developer Haemimont Games' Surviving series, Surviving Mars, saw players attempting to colonize and survive on the red planet through city building gameplay and real-world scientific data. The game received generally positive reviews upon release thanks in part due to its hardcore realistic elements and retro-futurism art style.

Haemimont Games is no stranger to the city building genre, having developed multiple RTS Roman Empire-themed titles as well as the communist dictator simulators Tropico 3, 4 and 5. Two pieces of downloadable content have come out for Surviving Mars since the game's initial release, Space Race and Green Planet, the latter of which added planetary terraforming and new technologies.

According to Nikhat Ali, Lead Producer for Surviving the Aftermath and Surviving Mars, the positive response from these DLC offerings taught them a lot about what players are looking for in their games. In an official announcement, Ali said monthly player activity increased eight-fold after Green Planet's launch, surpassing the game's previous player peak by 19 percent, and that clearly fans appreciate games which allow them to solve problems creatively in a dangerous environment. Ali also announced Surviving the Aftermath will be available to purchase through the early access Xbox Game Preview system later this year.

Even though the teaser trailer above does not show any gameplay footage, judging by the game's title and the amount of meteors falling in the logo's background one can surmise Surviving the Aftermath will feature gameplay similar to Surviving Mars but in the fallout of some sort of cataclysmic event such as an interstellar impact. While not much has been said about where the game will take place, whether on Mars or a different planet, Ali promises more details about Surviving the Aftermath will be released during PDXCon on October 19th.

Although Surviving Mars released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, so far only an Xbox One version of Surviving the Aftermath has been confirmed. With Haemimont Games now taking advantage of the Xbox Game Preview program, it's more than likely Surviving the Aftermath may end up with some sort of timed exclusivity deal on Xbox before eventually coming to other consoles. Survival fans won't have to wait long to find out, thankfully, because PDXCon is right around the corner.
