A poster of 4chan claims to have details of an upcoming open world Superman video game from Rocksteady Studios. The studio is best known for the enormously successful Batman: Arkham games, a critically-acclaimed series that mixes stealth, brawling and detective work. The series kicked off with Batman: Arkham Asylum, which saw the capes superhero trapped in the hostile environs of the notorious insane asylum for supervillains, before going open world with Arkham City and Arkham Knight, and then exploring the latest gaming technology in Arkham VR.

Rumors of a Superman game from Rocksteady have been around for years, and at the very least it seems like there was a Superman video game in development at one point. The question, however, is whether plans for the game were scrapped, or whether Rocksteady have secretly been developing it all along.

The latest iteration of this rumor comes from an anonymous 4chan poster – so yes, there’s reason enough to be skeptical right there. The poster claims that the game will be officially unveiled a couple of weeks before the gaming expo E3 (which takes place from June 12-14), and offered the following details about the gameplay:

Made by Rocksteady

Unreal Engine 4

Big open world Metropolis (about 3 times the size of Arkham Knight with a lot more buildings)

Can’t play as Clark Kent

Main villain is Brainiac

Nerfed Superman (TAS Levels)

Semi-destructible environments(think AK, no buildings are falling over)

Combat system integrates the flying (kind of like DBZ, you can punch someone then zoom towards them and repeat)

Set within the Arkhamverse

Tons of easter eggs to Superman’s lore, and some to the events that took place in the Batman Arkham Franchise

Aside from the fact that anonymous posts on the internet with no substantiating evidence aren’t a great source, there’s another big reason to doubt this claim. The post was accompanied by a picture of Superman – ostensibly a piece of concept art for the video game. Well, the latter part is true, but this definitely isn’t a “leak” that proves the poster’s legitimacy. The image was created by artist Charles Logan, who posted it to his ArtStation account more than three years ago. In the caption, Logan says that the image is “Superman concept art done for a client’s video game pitch which ended up being scrapped.”

What’s more, this isn’t even the first time a 4chan post claiming inside information about the Superman game has proven to be a lie. In November 2017, another 4chan “leak” claimed that the game would be unveiled as part of a cover story in the next issue of Game Informer, to which Game Informer’s executive editor Andrew Reiner responded, “Hahahaha… No.”

We’ll find out if this rumor is bogus or legitimate within the next few weeks; if there’s no Superman game announcement forthcoming in the lead-up to E3 (or during), we can safely dismiss this as another hoax. Still, you can’t blame Superman fans for wanting to believe.
