A Tweet from Obsidian studio design director Josh Sawyer indicates that Obsidian already has another major project in the works. Obsidian Entertainment is currently developing DLC for its popular action RPG The Outer Worlds, and it recently released survival game Grounded to early access on Windows and Xbox One. The studio also announced a new RPG called Avowed which many are considering a possible contender to the Elder Scrolls series.

Times have been pretty good for Obsidian. Its recent survival game Grounded hit 1 million players after only two days in early access, and while many flaws have been identified, the game clearly has strong potential and broad appeal. The teaser of Avowed has drawn enthusiastic attention from all kinds of RPG players, even those with no connection to the Pillars of Eternity franchise that the game is set in. Between these two projects and the Peril on Gorgon DLC for The Outer Worlds, set to release in just a month's time, Obsidian is clearly keeping very busy.

But it turns out they're even busier than they look. Recently Josh Sawyer, design director at Obsidian, wrote a blog post outlining his duties as a design director for the benefit of a curious fan who wanted to know how involved he was with Avowed. The post clarified that he had no direct involvement with Avowed, and explained what exactly his role was in the studio. When a fan expressed regret on Twitter that Sawyer wasn't directly overseeing the project, Sawyer replied promptly that he was, in fact, directly overseeing his own project, but that that project was not Avowed.

The direct implication of this tweet is that Obsidian, remarkably, has a fourth project in the works, despite all the work the developer is already doing. This is especially surprising given that previously Obsidian stated its intent to keep its development efforts and team sizes on a smaller scale. Undertaking this many projects at once seems like something of a departure from that goal. At the time of this writing there is, of course, no formal information about this mysterious additional Obsidian game, and it's anyone's guess when that might change.

Obsidian is a well-beloved developer for many reasons. Its RPG titles are very renowned; many still claim that its role in developing Fallout New Vegas made that game the best in the series. Fans of the team have a lot to look forward to in the future, and based on what Josh Sawyer said today, it sounds like this powerful team isn't slowing down anytime soon.
