60% of active Destiny 2 players bought Forsaken
Destiny 2 has followed the path of the original game almost too well – a mechanically excellent game lacking in content at launch gets an expansion one year later that its players fall in love with. The sequel has been doing very well since the launch of Forsaken, and well over half of active Destiny 2 players have bought into the expansion.
Digital sales data for September suggests that over 60% of monthly active Destiny 2 players picked up Forsaken, and it’s led to the game topping the charts for the month – at least on consoles. On PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Destiny 2 brought in more money this month than Spider-Man, FIFA 19, and even Fortnite.
That only applies to SuperData’s console rankings, however. On PC, Destiny 2 didn’t even crack the September top ten, though it’s a very different, and very worldwide market here. The battle royale rankings have reshuffled a bit since August, as PUBG brought in more money than Fortnite this time around. Other big winners on PC this month include World of Warcraft and Monster Hunter World.
As always, the most profitable games on PC for September see a big portion of their success in Asia – games like Dungeon Fighter Online, Crossfire, and Fantasy Westward Journey Online II don’t have much purchase in the West. You can see the full list of top-grossing digital PC titles below.
1: Dungeon Fighter Online
2: League of Legends
3: Crossfire
4: Fantasy Westward Journey Online II
5: World of Warcraft
6: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
7: Monster Hunter World
8: Fortnite: Battle Royale
9: World of Tanks
10: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
If you’re digging Forsaken, you might want to known how the Destiny 2 Barons came to be – you can find a detailed breakdown of their making at that link.
Earlier this year, Destiny 2 officially became “the largest PC launch in Activision history based on units,” according to Activision-Blizzard’s proxy statement. It was also the second-highest-grossing console game of 2017 in North America, behind Call of Duty: WWII – another Activision property.
