An alleged Far Cry 6 release date in May 2021 was recently leaked, courtesy of the Microsoft Store. Although the game's developer, Ubisoft, has not officially confirmed the date yet, it does fall in line with the news last month that the newest installment in the Far Cry franchise would be pushed to spring 2021 on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
The highly anticipated first-person shooter title takes place on the fictional Caribbean island called Yara, ruled by "El Presidente" Antón Castillo. While Antón (who is portrayed by Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito) raises his son, Diego (Anthony Gonzalez of Coco fame), the player controls a revolutionary named Dani Rojas in an attempt to bring the dictatorship down. Ubisoft's take on a modern guerrilla revolution is very different from that of Far Cry 5, which followed a theme of religious fanaticism in Montana. This installment also marks the first time that the franchise explores a major urban setting.
Far Cry fans are certainly excited to see what Ubisoft will do with the game, but unfortunately, they will likely have to wait until late spring to find out. A tweet from Wario64 on Wednesday included a screenshot and a link to the Microsoft online store, which lists Far Cry 6's release date as May 25, 2021, as well as a button to pre-order the game. Interestingly, there is no date listed on the PlayStation Store.

The game was originally scheduled for release on February 18, 2021, but Ubisoft announced last month that Far Cry 6 experienced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as was the case with several other huge games this year. The developer did not provide a new release date at the time, but an earnings call projected that it would be pushed past Q1, which would be some time after April 2021. So, the May 25 date would make sense. Another Ubisoft project, Rainbow Six: Quarantine, was also pushed back to the same time.
Retailer leaks are not always reliable, but the Microsoft Store has been known to share early dates in the past. Back in September, a similar leak occurred when the store listed Immortals: Fenyx Rising with a December 3 release date. That date was quickly taken down, though, so Far Cry 6's date could easily have been an error. Regardless, the leak does suggest that Ubisoft may reveal the official date soon. After all, The Game Awards 2020 is coming up in December, and the show has notoriously been a venue for big game announcements. Ubisoft has boasted that Far Cry 6 will be the most ambitious installment in the series, so it's no surprise that they want to take their time.
