To celebrate the launch of the PlayStation 5, and the 25th anniversary of the original PlayStation's launch, Sony has sent commemorative jackets to several of its employees. The PS5 launched last month, bringing Sony into the current generation and advancing console hardware into the modern day. The original PlayStation launched in 1994 in Japan, but the classic console was released internationally 25 years ago in September 1995.

2020 was a hugely successful year for Sony's PlayStation brand, with the launch of a new console and the release of several highly acclaimed exclusive titles. The launch of the PlayStation 5 broke records, with 3.4 million console sales marking the largest first month sales for any PlayStation console, despite massive demand and a general lack of supply. Sony's streak of hugely successful console exclusive games also continued in 2020, with particular success from Naughty Dog's The Last of Us II and Sucker Punch Productions' Ghost of Tsushima. These Sony exclusives received numerous Game Awards nominations, with The Last of Us II winning Game of the Year and Ghost of Tsushima winning Best Art Direction after a Game of the Year nomination.

According to PlayStation staff on Twitter, Sony has sent customized jackets to a number of PlayStation family employees to commemorate a milestone year for PlayStation. Jan "Gabby" Llanillo and Ben Narramore, a Senior QA at Naughty Dog and a Senior Manager at PlayStation Network, both posted pictures of the jacket to Twitter. The stylish number identifies the wearer as a member of the PS5 Launch Team, and the sleeve includes a logo for PlayStation's 25th Anniversary. The neck of the jacket is even lined with PlayStation's iconic button shapes, and the zipper strings feature a splash of signature blue coloring.

While Sony celebrates both new and old PlayStation consoles, new problems may be arising as the year draws to a close. Some players have begun reporting problems with the PlayStation 5's DualSense controller, which was highly praised upon the console's release for its comfort and reactivity. The controller's signature adaptive triggers, which can simulate sensations such as trigger resistance, are beginning to malfunction for hundreds of players due to a faulty spring. Sony has also been criticized for preventing the sale of customized PlayStation 5 faceplates, despite the faceplates being quite easy to take on and off for customization purposes. Third-party manufacturer Dbrand intends to sell these faceplates in the new year, and has dared Sony to intervene.

While 2020 has been a tumultuous year, to say the least, it has been an undeniably successful year for Sony and PlayStation. The PS5 and PlayStation exclusive games have both been wildly successful, arguably allowing Sony to enter into 2021 with a leg up over competitors Microsoft and Nintendo. By showing their appreciation for employees of the PlayStation family with stylish gear, Sony can ensure loyalty while also paving the way for an even more prosperous future.
