Patty Jenkins, director of Wonder Woman 1984, doesn't plan on directing the Amazonian spinoff film. Jenkins is the director responsible for bringing fans the first Wonder Woman standalone film in 2017, as well as the sequel that's coming out this year.
At the end of last year, it was announced that a spinoff revolving around the Amazonians and Themyscira was being considered. Very little was known about the potential Warner Bros. project since it hadn't been confirmed, but Hippolyta actress Connie Nielsen did give fans an update this year. Nielsen confirmed that the Amazonian movie has already been "all mapped out" and that she would definitely like to return for the spinoff. Now Jenkins has given an update on the movie as well.
When speaking with Total Film (via: Games Radar), Jenkins said that she has a story arc that extends over four films, but that plan doesn't include her directing the spinoff, saying, "I’m not going to direct it, hopefully. I’m going to try really hard not to. It’s not going to be easy. But [WW84 co-writer and former DC Entertainment President and Chief Creative Officer] Geoff Johns and I came up with the story, and we sold the pitch, and we’re going to get it going. I’ll produce it, for sure." Jenkins also explained that she isn't really going to be working on another Wonder Woman project until Wonder Woman 1984 is releases in August.

While essentially nothing is known about the Amazonian spinoff, there is plenty that fans are looking forward to in Wonder Woman 1984. Fans have known for a while that Diana Prince would be going up against Cheetah (Kristen Wiig), while also dealing with Maxwell lord (Pedro Pascal). Fans have gotten plenty of marketing material for Wonder Woman 1984, but news about the film lately has been about its delay. Wonder Woman 1984 is one of the many films that have been delayed because of the Coronavirus, and Nielsen is even concerned that the Wonder Woman sequel won't make it's new August release date. Despite the film's delay, Jenkins has assured fans that Wonder Woman 1984 will still come to theaters.
Wonder Woman was one of the more critically acclaimed films in the DCEU, so it makes sense that Warner Bros. is moving forward with the Amazonian spinoff. Fans may be a bit disappointed to hear that Jenkins won't be directing the film, but that means she will be that much more focused on Wonder Woman 3. Both movies are likely to happen if Wonder Woman 1984 does well at the box office, which it likely will since fans will be itching to see the film after the delay.
