Wonder Woman 1984's Gal Gadot reveals the movie's first scene makes her cry—in a good way. The upcoming DC Extended Universe film is one of the year's most anticipated, though it's faced delays, recently due to COVID-19. Wonder Woman 1984 is currently set to release on December 25, 2020. However, that could change depending on how the pandemic evolves. The sequel's director, Patty Jenkins, remains committed to a theatrical release for the movie, so it's unlikely it will go to streaming anytime soon.
Despite Wonder Woman 1984's delay, the cast and creative team have continued promoting the film. In the last several months, Warner Bros. has released new trailers and images showing off Diana's Golden Eagle armor and Cheetah's final form. Merchandise items, including a tie-in novel, have revealed details about Wonder Woman 1984's plot, including how Steve Trevor returns. Fans have also known for awhile that both young Diana Prince and Themyscira will be back, thanks to comments by Jenkins and the film's trailers.
Specifically, Wonder Woman 1984 will feature an Amazon Olympics with young Diana, with Jenkins previously calling it "everything that we got to really celebrate in the first movie." In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Gadot spoke about the flashback scene, which opens the film:

Gadot's words amount to a ringing endorsement of Wonder Woman 1984's first scene. It sounds like it will be a triumphant return to Themyscira. It also illuminates the importance of the film returning there, as Diana's upbringing with the Amazons had a huge impact on her hero's journey in Wonder Woman and elsewhere in the DCEU. It makes sense to remind audiences of that right at the start of the movie, as Diana's childhood will continue to inform her story in Wonder Woman 1984. This is also a good idea considering the film's time period will take Diana even further from Themyscira than Wonder Woman did.
The Amazon Olympics will provide an exciting start to the movie, the same way Diana's training did in the first film. Additionally, from Gadot's statement, it sounds as though the scene could provoke a similar emotional response in moviegoers as the famous "No Man's Land" scene in Wonder Woman. That too was an impactful moment of female empowerment in a film thankfully full of them. All told, Gadot's reaction to Wonder Woman 1984's opening scene should make audiences even more excited to finally see the movie.
