Legendary Pictures is trolling Godzilla vs. Kong fans over the yet-to-be-released trailer. The highly anticipated MonsterVerse bout is seven months away. It was initially scheduled for release earlier this year in March but was delayed two times. While frustrating for fans, the wait is still far shorter than the gap between 2014's Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Godzilla vs. Kong plot details remain scarce, although a toy packaging synopsis says the Hollow Earth is a focal point.
So far, everything is pointing to Godzilla vs. Kong being a monstrous culmination of the previous MontserVerse movies. Despite Legendary not talking too much about the film, many are looking forward to it simply based on the title. This will be the first time in nearly 60 years since the two creatures crossed paths. Director Adam Wingard has hyped big monster action on more than one occasion for Godzilla vs. Kong and Junkie XL, the composer, is a big Godzilla fan. While all good stuff, the thing fans most want to see is the trailer. News has finally arrived, although it's probably not the news fans wanted to hear.
Today, Legendary announced a MonsterVerse costume giveaway. Upon completing an entry, an individual is entered to win a prize pack of Godzilla and Kong costumes. However, probably the most exciting aspect of this announcement is that Legendary brings up the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer, saying, "your kids can act out the GvK trailer until we finally share the real one." While some may be annoyed with this, one can see Legendary's humor acknowledging fans asking for the trailer constantly. The fact Legendary humorously pokes fun means it is saving the trailer until the absolute right moment, not when fans want it. Godzilla: King of the Monsters under-performed, so Legendary wants to make sure Godzilla vs. Kong doesn't fall into the same hole. For now, a new logo Godzilla vs. Kong will have to do. Meanwhile, if interested in the actual contest, there are a few ways to gain additional entries, so be sure to check out the rules page.
It's hard to say when that absolute right moment is for Godzilla vs. Kong's trailer release. The movie industry is currently in flux, with numerous release date changes. Warner Bros. delayed four upcoming DC Comics films to later dates, as an example. It's possible Legendary is waiting to see how the movie industry looks a few months from now. It's frustrating, but for now, fans will have to wait and see before marketing really pushes forward for Godzilla vs. Kong.
