Though Netflix's The Witcher series just premiered this month, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich already has plans for the story through season 7. Based on the popular novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, the fantasy show stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, a powerful mutant monster hunter, who finds himself deeply entrenched in a war for power that threatens the world around him. The series' other main characters are Yennefer of Vengerberg and Princess Ciri, played by newcomers Anya Chalotra and Freya Allen respectively.
The Witcher premiered its first season on the streamer December 20. The Witcher season 2 was confirmed by Netflix ahead of its release, to come in 2021. In the first season, we see our three main characters - Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri - on their own important, formative journeys, before they come together to face the threats to their world. Geralt is a member of the Witcher group, people who are genetically modified and trained to hunt monsters. Yennefer is an extremely powerful mage, and young Princess Ciri holds a strange power that she doesn't understand.
Reported by GamesRadar, showrunner Hissrich has already mapped out a possible seven seasons for the show. The show is clearly expected to be successful for Netflix, as their season 2 renewal was announced before the first season even started streaming. When questioned about her plans for season 2, Hissrich responded that she's already planned far into the future of these characters' stories. In further response, she said, "The worst thing we could do is put all of our energies just into season 1, and not be thinking about where these characters can grow to.” Hissrich was an executive producer on other successful Netflix shows like Daredevil and The Umbrella Academy.

While the first season sets up all of these diverse characters and their singular backgrounds, season 2 promises to see The Witcher's characters split up less. Many fans are eager to see Geralt and Ciri together, and are hoping more favorite characters appear, like Vesemir, Geralt's mentor and a fellow Witcher. In the show and book series, there aren't many Witchers left, and they are generally disliked or feared by humans. Season 1 begins with Geralt of Rivia as a fully trained Witcher. We don't know much about his origin yet, as it will most likely be explored in future seasons.
With Cavill as your lead character, it makes perfect sense why Netflix holds so much confidence in the series. He has expressed a lot of enthusiasm for playing the character of Geralt, and hopes to continue. With such great and extensive source material, there's a lot of story to be explored in this universe - certainly enough for seven seasons. Many people are also familiar with The Witcher video games. The show is not directly influenced by it, but it includes a few moments that are direct nods to the games' fans. It's also been reported the show has caused a huge increase in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt players. We have over a year to wait for The Witcher season 2, but season 1's success has laid the groundwork for us to see Geralt's story unfold on screen for many years.
