As his comic book series adaptation is gearing up to end, The Umbrella Academy creator Steve Blackman has joined the Horizon Zero Dawn Netflix show. Developed by Guerrilla Games, Horizon Zero Dawn follows an outsider named Aloy who navigates a post-apocalyptic America that has been overrun by towering robotic beings. While contending with these dangerous machines, Aloy sets out to uncover the mystery of her past and put an end to the robotic threat.

In an interview with Netflix Tudum to discuss its renewal, The Umbrella Academy creator Steve Blackman was revealed to have joined the Horizon Zero Dawn Netflix show. He describes what inspired him to adapt the game into a show, being drawn to characters that are relatable, yet outsiders, existing on the fringe of society, and hopes to capture similar success to The Umbrella Academy. See what Blackman said below:

From a character- and world-building perspective, there's a clear throughline: I gravitate to characters who are grounded and relatable but exist on the fringe. Outliers who struggle to find their place in a world of conformity and structure. All my stories strive to subvert expectation and find a new way of looking into the worlds we think we know. Horizon Zero Dawn is an exceptionally well-crafted game with wonderful characters not often seen in the rank-and-file of the gaming world. Guerrilla Games has created an incredibly lush and vivid world of man and machine who find themselves on a collision course to oblivion. Their salvation comes in the form of a young female warrior named Aloy, who has no idea she's the key to saving the world. Suffice it to say, yes, Aloy will be a main character in our story. My writing partner on this, Michelle Lovretta, and I are thrilled to be able to expand this remarkable IP into a series for all types of viewers.

Blackman's comments about his desire to run the Horizon Zero Dawn Netflix show should prove promising for fans of the video game, given his adoration for the source material and devotion to accurately adapting the game. Additionally, it should be exciting to get the confirmation that Aloy will still be a main character for the series.

Netflix is no stranger to video game adaptations, having produced Resident Evil, The Cuphead Show!, and Castlevania. Given Blackman's success adapting The Umbrella Academy, fans of Horizon Zero Dawn should have high hopes for the show's chances in capturing the game's spirit.
