There are a lot more Star Wars movies on the way. Today we’re going to look at every upcoming movie confirmed and in development.

When Disney purchased Lucasfilm back in 2012, they had one goal: to bring back George Lucas’ space opera. They’ve certainly succeeded. Three films into the Disney era, Lucasfilm has launched both a sequel trilogy and a series of spinoff anthology movies. They’re now releasing a new Star Wars film every single year, meaning fans have a lot to look forward to. So what can we expect in the future? Here’s a list of everything known to be in the works.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY – MAY 2018



Due for release on May 25 of this year, Solo is Lucasfilm’s second anthology film. Starring Alden Ehrenreich as the youthful Han Solo, the film is set will reveal the scoundrel’s backstory, including the Kessel Run and, of course, his winning of the Millennium Falcon off Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian. Unfortunately, Solo has been plagued with behind-the-scenes controversies; directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were replaced with Ron Howard, and there have since been reports he reshot “nearly all” of the film, for “twice the budget.”

STAR WARS EPISODE IX – DECEMBER 2019



Episode IX has already been a challenging film, with Carrie Fisher’s tragic death forcing dramatic rewrites of the script. Matters became further complicated when director Colin Trevorrow exited the project in September 2017 amid reports Lucasfilm were unhappy with his redrafts. Lucasfilm signed up J.J. Abrams to take over. A director who already launched the sequels in style with The Force Awakens, he’ll now have to bring this story to a satisfying close.

RIAN JOHNSON’S NEW STAR WARS TRILOGY



Lucasfilm were clearly impressed by Rian Johnson’s work on The Last Jedi. In November, they announced that he would launch a new trilogy outside of the Skywalker Saga. Remarkably, Johnson’s pitch didn’t even include a story; he’s still in the early stages of drafting a plot, so there isn’t much news about this trilogy yet. “I’m… thinking of what’s the story going to be,” Johnson explained during Episode VIII‘s press tour, “Who is it going to follow? What elements is it going to have? What kind of drama is in it?”

BOBA FETT MOVIE



Boba Fett is tremendously popular among fans, almost in spite of his small on-screen role in the original trilogy. As such, Lucasfilm has long toyed with the idea of producing a Boba Fett spinoff. They signed up Josh Trank as director back in 2014, but he left the project around the release of Fantastic Four. It’s been in limbo ever since, although in summer there were rumors Lucasfilm was attempting to breathe life into it once again. That was apparently confirmed in December, with reports the film has a working title of “Tin Can”.

OBI-WAN KENOBI


In August, it was revealed Lucasfilm was beginning to actually work on an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff. The character is another popular one, and there are serious hopes Ewan McGregor will reprise the role. According to initial reports, Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry is in talks to head up the project.

Sources have indicated the film has a working title of “Joshua Tree“. Fans of U2 will recognize this as the name of a much-loved album, whose cover features Zabriskie Point in Southern California’s Death Valley. That location was used by Lucas to film scenes set in Tatooine in A New Hope, leading fans to expect that the film will be set during Kenobi’s self-imposed exile to Tatooine.

OTHER STAR WARS FILMS


Lucasfilm is reportedly considering some other anthology films too, although by most accounts these are in the early stages. There were rumors of a Yoda film as far back as 2013, and recent reports have suggested that idea is back on the table. There’s also some evidence Lucasfilm is toying with a film centered on Jabba the Hutt. That would certainly be an odd choice, as the villain was portrayed as pretty unlikable back in Return of the Jedi.

The first three Disney Star Wars movies have grossed over $4 billion in the global box office. Although there are sure to be stumbles along the way, Lucasfilm can remain confident that Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon. These movies will continue to perform, and wise decisions will open up whole new opportunities. Whether that comes through exploring the galaxy’s ancient history, or stepping into the far future, the Star Wars movies will remain one of the most exciting franchises of our time.
