The new Wrong Turn trailer for the upcoming reboot could reveal the film to be a secret sequel. The original film came out in 2003 and starred Eliza Dushku, Desmond Harrington, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Jeremy Sisto as a group of unsuspecting teenagers lost in the backwoods of West Virginia. They are attacked by a family of cannibalistic inbreds and must fight to survive. While the first film was a minor box office success, it spawned five sequels, with the most recent film, Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort, releasing in 2016.
The seventh film, titled after the original movie, will feature the return of original screenwriter Alan B. McElroy. Matthew Modine, Charlotte Vega, Daisy Head, and Emma Dumont are set to star. The film's official synopsis teases a mysterious group, called The Foundation, a new generation of cannibals. Originally scheduled to be released in 2020, the coronavirus pandemic pushed the movie into 2021.
A new Wrong Turn trailer previews the upcoming bloodbath with a political bent. The narrator of the trailer teases the legacy of the cannibalistic inbred family and their desire to form a new country. The clip begins rather simply, as a new group of young, good-looking twenty-somethings venture into the woods for some camping fun before they encounter the traps set by the dwellers of the woods. Check out the trailer here:
While the Wrong Turn trailer treads in familiar territory, there are some interesting tidbits that tease new dimensions to the potential sequel. Modine's character seems to be keenly aware of the cannibalistic family and their intent to build a new country out of their home base in West Virginia. Modine's character seems to be a resident of a nearby town, putting him in a unique position to keep tabs on the inbred family and their evil doings. Still, it looks like his warnings won't be enough to prevent a new group of people from falling prey to the evil lurking in the woods.
Despite the first film's minor success, the franchise has been long running. Most of those sequels have been straight to DVD or otherwise on-demand, but the new Wrong Turn film could usher in a new era for the series. The narration seems to imply as much, with an unknown female character implying a larger plot at play. Wrong Turn looks like it's gearing up to not only please fans of the original, but introduce a whole new generation to the horrors of rural West Virginia. Even if original scream queen Dushku isn't returning, this reboot may be returning to its roots.
