Every Major Movie Still Releasing In 2020

The 2020 movie schedule has changed significantly this year due to coronavirus, but here is every movie still slated to be released in theaters. When 2020 began, there was a promising schedule of movies of all genres and sizes to be excited about. While Bad Boys for Life and Sonic the Hedgehog proved to be early year box office successes, the rest of the year has seen incredible changeover. The coronavirus pandemic shut down movie theaters in March, and the movie industry hasn't been the same since.

When movie theaters shut down, spring releases like A Quiet Place II, Mulan, and No Time to Die were delayed. It wasn't long after that F9 moved out of 2020 entirely, and studios slowly began taking films out of the summer season. For better or worse, Tenet has been the film that is mainly dictating what theaters and other studios do, as its recent indefinite delay has caused more reshuffles. In some cases, the delay of one film meant delaying many others, leaving 2021 and the following years with nearly as many changes. These delays likely won't stop either as productions are still stalled mainly around the world.

Delays haven't been the only decisions to impact the theatrical movie experience, as many films have been sold or moved to streaming services so they can be released now. Disney took Artemis Fowl and Hamilton to Disney+, Paramount sold The Lovebirds to Netflix, and Universal made noise by making SCOOB! and Trolls World Tour Video On Demand options. These are just a selection of titles that would've been released in theaters. The VOD option and delays have left only a handful of significant movies still scheduled to be released in theaters in 2020.

    The New Mutants - 8/28

Disney and Fox's The New Mutants is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on August 28th. The Josh Boone-directed X-Men film was initially slated to be released in 2018 but has already been delayed multiple times. It was supposed to come out in April before coronavirus hit, and despite Disney's push to market the movie at Comic-Con@Home, the chances of it sticking to the current date seem slim. The panel even joked about the likelihood of New Mutants getting pushed again, even amidst speculation it could go straight to Disney+ instead. Since Disney moved Mulan out of August, the odds of New Mutants coming out then doesn't look good.

Bill & Ted: Face The Music - 9/1

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winters' return for Bill & Ted: Face the Music will be available in theaters on September 1st, but that won't be all. The film was previously set to be released on August 14th but moved back to August 28th when Tenet was pushed to August. Now, Bill & Ted: Face the Music has been moved to September for its theatrical release, but the movie will also be available on VOD the same day. Since most theaters might not be open at the start of September, the on-demand option could wind up being the only way to see Bill & Ted 3.

    The King's Man - 9/18

Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman prequel The King's Man is slated to hit theaters on September 18th. The film was previously set to be released in February of 2020 but was pushed to September long before coronavirus hit. At the moment, Disney and Fox have yet to change The King's Man release date. Although there is a chance that select theaters could be open by then, other major studios have pulled highly-anticipated films out of September recently, so The King's Man current date is far from secure.

    Wonder Woman 1984 - 10/2

Wonder Woman 1984 is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 2nd. Warner Bros. sequel to Wonder Woman was originally planned to come out last December before moving up to November 2019 to avoid Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The Gal Gadot-led sequel was then delayed to June 2020 so that it could be a summer blockbuster just like the first film, but that put it in the crosshairs of coronavirus delays. It was already delayed to August and now October due to the pandemic, so only time will tell whether or not theaters will be able to show Wonder Woman 1984 on this current date.

    Candyman - 10/16

The upcoming Candyman reboot/sequel produced by Jordan Peele is slated to hit theaters on October 16th now. The movie was previously scheduled to be released in June but was then delayed to August due to coronavirus. Then once Universal pushed Halloween Kills back to 2021, the studio elected to move Candyman again to the current October date. Having a release date closer to Halloween could be beneficial for the film as long as it is able to open at that time and not suffer another delay.

Death On The Nile - 10/23

Kenneth Branaugh's Murder on the Orient Express sequel Death on the Nile is now slated to be released on October 23rd. The movie was previously delayed from December 2019 to October 9th after the Disney-Fox deal. It was recently announced, though, that the film would be pushed back two more weeks. It's unclear if Death on the Nile will have to be delayed again, but Disney appears to believe that the October date is achievable currently.

    Black Widow - 11/6

Black Widow is now the only Marvel Cinematic Universe movie scheduled to be released in 2020, and the Scarlett Johansson solo film currently has a November 6th release date. The movie was intended to kick-off Marvel's Phase 4 in May of this year, but it had to be delayed due to coronavirus until this fall. It took the spot of Eternals, which meant changing much of the Phase 4 slate. With several months to go before Black Widow's current date, there is a chance theaters will be open again, but Marvel and Disney could also choose to delay it until 2021 when the global box office could be closer to normal.

    Soul - 11/20

Pixar's Soul is now scheduled to be released in theater on November 20th. The new original Pixar adventure was set to launch this summer, but it was delayed to November due to coronavirus. There haven't been any updates on the status of Soul's release date since, although some speculation has started over the possibility of it becoming a Disney+ launch. This would likely only happen if the November release isn't possible, but as of now, that is still the plan.

No Time To Die - 11/25

Daniel Craig's final James Bond film No Time To Die is expected to be released in theaters on November 25th. The movie has been delayed three times already, with the most recent one the result of coronavirus. Although No Time To Die was an early example of moving several months, there are still rumors it could be delayed again. Universal and MGM are reportedly considering a delay to summer 2021, so the current November release date is certainly not guaranteed.

    Free Guy - 12/11

Ryan Reynolds is slated to swing back into action with Free Guy on December 11th. The film set within a video game, directed by Shawn Levy, was previously scheduled as a summer 2020 blockbuster by Fox. However, once coronavirus started to become an ongoing problem, Free Guy was pushed from June to the current December date. Even if films previously mentioned do wind up being delayed, it's possible theaters could be open by December and allow Free Guy to avoid another delay.

    West Side Story - 12/18

Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story is still scheduled to be released on December 18th. Disney announced this release date in 2019, and they have yet to move Spielberg's musical off this spot. The film stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler in the romantic story. The history of the musical and Spielberg's involvement gives West Side Story plenty of potential to be a box office hit whenever it arrives, even if it does wind up missing this December date.

    Coming 2 America - 12/18

Eddie Murphy's Coming 2 America is currently slated to be in theaters on December 18th. Paramount originally dated the long-awaited sequel for August 2020 but delayed it to the Christmas season last year. There hasn't been any talk of postponing the film as a result of coronavirus yet, and any such decisions might not need to be made for a few more months. No marketing materials for Coming 2 America have been released yet, and they might continue to be missing until Paramount is confident of its release date.

    Dune - 12/18

Denis Villeneuve's Dune is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18th as well. Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel stars Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, and many others. First look images from the movie have already been released, and Ferguson confirmed reshoots would happen soon, which is potentially a good sign of Dune staying on track. As long as theaters are open by December, Dune could still keep this release date.
