Spider-Man: Far From Home's Jake Gyllenhaal celebrated #BestFriendsDay by engaging in some good, old-fashioned trolling with fellow superhero movie stars Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds and X-Men's Hugh Jackman. Since Reynolds first debuted as Wade Wilson in 2016, he's embarked on a hilarious faux-rivalry/obsession with Jackman, best known for his various turns as Wolverine. From Reynolds wearing a Jackman mask in the first Deadpool movie, to blaming Jackman for not wanting a Deadpool/Wolverine big screen crossover, Reynolds has delighted in taking light-hearted jabs at the Australian actor, all with a knowing wink and a (mostly) healthy dose of professional appreciation, with Jackman giving as good as he gets in return.

The duo's friendship took on a new Gyllenhaal-shaped dimension this past Christmas, as Reynolds posted images of the trio at a swanky festive party, with Jackman and Gyllenhaal supposedly having instructed Reynolds to wear a holiday-themed sweater, while they attended in their regular clothes. Thanks to this classic prank, the photos of Reynolds looking despondent in his exaggerated Christmas attire quickly did the rounds online and established these three A-list actors as prime cohorts in social media-based mischief.

The fun continued this past weekend, as the U.S. celebrated National Best Friends Day. Typically, Reynolds fired the first shot, posting a picture of himself and Jackman deep in conversation to his Instagram page with the caption "Happy #BestFriendsDay to Jake Gyllenhaal! (Not pictured)." Jackman duly replied with a post and photo of his own, accusing Reynolds of being a "Stage 4 Clinger" and giving a shout out to Gyllenhaal in the process. Finally, the man playing Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home himself replied mirroring Reynolds' post, but with his own photo alongside Jackman.


In all likelihood, the posts are perhaps little more than three incredibly famous actors, who all get along personally in real life, taking full advantage of the fun and immediate fan connection that social media brings to the celebrity game. Nevertheless, it's incredibly endearing to see Reynolds acting like Jackman's biggest fan, attempting to gain the respect of his more senior colleague and undoubtedly one of the best in the business when it comes to playing superheroes on the big screen.

The fact that all three men are now part of the superhero movie club adds another layer to their antics. Deadpool brilliantly blurred the lines between Jackman the actor and his famous clawed mutant character and the film certainly wasn't shy in showing the Australian plenty of love. That comedic motif has now seeped into the real world and, thanks to Jackman's good humor, has taken on a life of its own. It'll be interesting to see what Jackman and Reynolds have to say about Gyllenhaal's Mysterio when Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters in a few weeks.
