A new Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny trailer reveals more of Harrison Ford's anticipated return to the title role. The movie from director James Mangold is set to release in theaters nationwide June 30, but not before making its premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival on May 18.
Now, as Lucasfilm presents its film slate at Star Wars Celebration, a new Indiana Jones 5 trailer shows off new footage of Indy's latest adventure:
The new trailer seems to confirm a popular theory that the titular Dial of Destiny would involve time travel.
What Time Travel Means For Indiana Jones 5
The trailer sees Mads Mikkelsen's new villain, former Nazi Jürgen Voller, hinting that the Dial of Destiny can be used to travel through time, expressing his wish to see Hitler win World War II. Ford has already praised Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's script, meaning the movie is likely to retain the same level of adventure as other films, even with the vastly different premise. A time-travel adventure would also allow the movie to pay homage to the many Indiana Jones adventures that have come before it.
If the Dial is a tool used to travel through time, then it's likely old Indy will try and use it to stop Jürgen before he has a chance to use it to help the Nazis win. It could also result in a crossover between old and young Indy as both try to stop Jürgen in an adventure through time. While young Indy scenes have been hinted to be taking place in a flashback, if the Dial is truly a time travel device, then it's possible young Indy is actually fighting alongside his older counterpart.
If the Dial of Destiny is a time-travel device, however, it lends support for allegations that time travel would be used to erase Indy's previous adventures. However, with Mangold's denial of that and Disney confirming that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will end the franchise, it's unlikely the film will see this transpire, or have someone like Indy's Goddaughter Helena succeed him in the role. Instead, it appears the time-traveling adventure in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be one final love letter to the franchise before it's retired for good.
