Dragon’s Dogma is getting its own anime adaptation on Netflix soon, and a new trailer shows fans of the game that they’ll see plenty of familiar faces in the show - though not necessarily friendly ones. The cult classic RPG Dragon’s Dogma has seen releases on current and last-gen Xbox and PlayStation consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Despite fan demand, there’s still no sequel in sight, though the game’s director has said he considered making one before deciding to direct Devil May Cry 5 instead.

The Dragon’s Dogma anime on Netflix was announced in mid-June with tantalizingly few details about what it would entail. At the time of its reveal, Netflix only shared a teaser image, a few screenshots, and a barebones page on its website. The description on the show’s website confirmed that its star would be an Arisen - the player character from the game - named Ethan, adding the detail that “with every demon he battles, the more he loses his humanity,” an element that wasn’t present in the game.

Now, Netflix is offering fans a much closer look at its upcoming Dragon’s Dogma. Based on the new trailer, the show will be using a lot of features from the game that will look familiar to fans, but they may not be exactly the same as their in-game counterparts. Like in the game, the Arisen will travel with a companion called a Pawn to track down a dragon after it steals his heart. One of the game’s toughest foes, the griffin, features prominently in the new trailer, as do several other iconic monsters, such as a cyclops, a lich, and hordes of undead warriors and goblins. Ethan’s Pawn, Hannah, can be seen firing off a magical arrow from her bow, not unlike an ability from the game, and even some of the armor that Ethan, Hannah, and their yet-unnamed human companions are wearing look like they would fit right into its armory. One iconic element from the game that the trailer doesn’t show is the Arisen scaling his massive enemies to attack their weak points, or tossing goblins off cliffs en masse - though the former seems more likely than the latter to happen in the show.

Dragon’s Dogma won’t be the first - or the most famous - game to get made into an anime by Netflix. The streaming service premiered Castlevania in 2017 to positive reviews, and it’s aired three seasons of the show so far, with a fourth on the way. Cyberpunk 2077 will also be getting an anime on Netflix, though not until 2022.

While Dragon’s Dogma may not seem like the most natural choice for a Netflix anime adaptation, the new trailer is certainly worth getting excited over. Fans will likely tune in just to satisfy the craving for a sequel that may never come, but even those who aren’t devotees of the cult of Dragon’s Dogma may now have a new show to look forward to after the impressive sneak peek.

Dragon's Dogma premieres on Netflix on September 17th, 2020.
