A new trailer for BBC One and Amazon Prime’s upcoming series, A Very British Scandal, has been released. The series explores the explosive marriage between the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, with a focus on their subsequent divorce, which would become one of the most significant legal cases of the 20th century. Claire Foy stars as the beautiful and charismatic Margaret, Duchess of Argyll, while Paul Bettany stars as Ian Campbell, the Duke of Argyll.

In a new trailer released by the BBC, viewers are shown a contrasting picture of British high society in the 20th century. Sharing glimpses at old-fashioned English romanticism, the stereotypical love story between the Duke and Duchess quickly twists into something distinctly toxic. “Every morning, I wonder which Ian I’m going to wake up to,” says Margaret as the trailer flashes between snippets of the couple’s disintegrating marriage. As headlines announce their impending divorce and the media swarms, viewers see hints of the scandalous photographs which would plague the Duchess for a lifetime. “He doesn’t care about affairs. The only thing he cares about is destroying me,” she says. Check out the trailer below:

The show follows on from the 2018 series of A Very English Scandal, which starred Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw. It depicted the 1970s scandal surrounding Jeremy Thorpe, the then leader of the Liberal Party. Blueprint Pictures, which produced the first series, also worked on the upcoming three episodes. Helmed by Anne Sewitsky and written by Sarah Phelps, A Very British Scandal will debut on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on 26 December, with plans to arrive on Amazon Prime in the new year.

A Very British Scandal premieres on BBC One on December 26.
