James Gunn confirms Peacemaker season 2's place in the larger DCEU. After introducing the character in last year's The Suicide Squad, John Cena's Christopher Smith/Peacemaker got his very own spinoff show on HBO Max. Peacemaker season 1 was a hit with both audiences and critics, chronicling the anti-hero's team-up with Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and John Economos (Steve Agee), to stop an invasion from an alien race dubbed Butterflies.
Not long after the conclusion of season 1, it was announced that Peacemaker season 2 would be moving forward. Little is known about the project so far, but Gunn has confirmed that work on the new season will begin when he has finished production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Cena's Peacemaker is expected to return, in addition to the characters played by Stroma, Brooks, Holland, and Agee. While details regarding Peacemaker season 2 continue to emerge, many fans have wondered about Peacemaker's general place in the DCEU. Specifically, one Twitter user asked the filmmaker how the new season will figure into the larger plans for the DC movie franchise's multiverse, which will soon see the return of both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton's Batmen in the upcoming The Flash.
Now Gunn has laid some of these concerns to rest. He confirms that, like season 1, Peacemaker season 2 will be a part of the DCEU. The writer/director also affirms that Peacemaker will continue to be a part of the DCEU moving forward. Outside of those confirmations, however, Gunn doesn't elaborate any further on his plans for Peacemaker season 2. Check out Gunn's tweet below:
Gunn's comments follow recent reports that next year's The Flash is set to act as something of a reboot for the DCEU. The film, which has been mired in controversy because of star Ezra Miller, is confirmed to introduce the concept of the multiverse into the DCEU, beginning with Affleck and Keaton reprising their Batman roles. While Peacemaker mostly seems to exist on its own, away from many of the goings-on in the DCEU, the Peacemaker season 1 finale did feature cameos from a handful of DC heroes in the Justice League, including Miller's Flash and Jason Momoa's Aquaman. Now, Gunn has confirmed that this connection will be maintained.
Peacemaker season 1 was something of a surprise hit, and fans are understandably excited to see what Gunn has planned for season 2. With the DCEU undergoing something of a shake-up right now, the confirmation that Peacemaker's place in the franchise remains unchanged is sure to please fans of the character who hope to see the Cena's role expand, with further opportunities for major DC crossovers. Although Gunn's recent confirmation is a welcome one, it will likely be a few months before further concrete details regarding Peacemaker season 2 start to emerge.
