The original costume worn by Scarlet Witch in Marvel Comics will be making an appearance in WandaVision, according to the latest footage shared by Disney+. The character, played by Elizabeth Olsen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will be at the center of the miniseries alongside Paul Bettany's Vision. WandaVision is expected to be the second Disney+ TV series set in the MCU following the debut of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, made her Marvel Comics debut during The X-Men #4 in 1964. Originally perceived as a mutant, Scarlet Witch first served as a supervillain along with her twin brother Quicksilver. The character was also said to be the daughter of Magneto for a majority of her story arc. The mutant with the power to alter reality later switched from villain to hero and became a regular member of the Avengers. Scarlet Witch was introduced into the MCU in the post-credits scene for 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She then played a pertinent role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
The plans for WandaVision on Disney+ were initially reported in late 2018. The six-episode miniseries will put Wanda in the spotlight by allowing the character to show off more of her abilities. WandaVision is set after Endgame but fans eager to see how Vision will play into the series considering his character was killed in Infinity War. The series is expected to have a classic sitcom feel, which is evident by the teaser shown during Super Bowl LIV. As part of the Disney+ TV spot, Wanda can be seen wearing costumes referencing a number of popular sitcoms, but one outfit, in particular, is a callback to Scarlet Witch's comic book history. Wanda can be seen wearing the comic book accurate red costume in the sequence.
How The Red Costume In WandaVision Pays Tribute To Marvel Comics

Wanda's red outfit is clearly a way to pay homage to Jack Kirby and his original conception of Scarlet Witch. Olsen's character stands in front of the steps while wearing the red leotard with a matching cape, opera gloves, and headpiece. Kirby often designed headpieces for characters to avoid drawing ears which was the case for Scarlet Witch. The costume closely resembles the ensemble that her comic book counterpart is known for. It's unclear why Wanda is wearing the outfit in the Disney+ series, since the scene is revealed during a quick montage. WandaVision will reportedly put Wanda and Vision in different eras of sitcoms so this might be the show's tribute to the '50s, the decade that saw Scarlet Witch's debut.
Some viewers are speculating that Wanda's red costume is part of some type of Halloween episode in which she uses her alter ego as the basis for a new look. With WandaVision moving up to a 2020 release, it's possible that the premiere coincides with October making for the perfect opportunity to tie in with Halloween. Aside from Olsen and Bettany, WandaVision will also feature Kat Dennings and Randall Park reprising their MCU roles of Darcy Lewis and Jimmy Woo, respectively. The cast also includes Teyonah Parris and Kathyrn Hahn. The events of WandaVision will have repercussions for the rest of Phase 4 of the MCU and is said to tie-in to Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
