Ryan Reynolds congratulates Joker on breaking the Deadpool and Deadpool 2 record to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. Warner Bros. and DC Films experimented with an R-rated comic book movie yet again this year by focusing on DC's most iconic villain. Although some were hesitant when the project was first announced, Joaquin Phoenix delivered an incredible performance as the Clown Prince of Crime and has been the center of great reception for Joker.

After a debut on the festival circuit that made Joker look to be a serious awards contender, anticipation for the movie reached a feverish pitch. This led to the movie's box office projections continuing to rise and eventually opening to an October-best $96 million domestically. Over the last few weeks, Joker has remained a strong performer at the box office around the globe, leading to an expectation that it would become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all-time.

Now just a few days later, Joker officially set a new box office record for R-rated movies and does so by surpassing the performance of Reynolds' Deadpool movies. In what is now a common practice among those involved with the films and studios, Reynolds took to Twitter to congratulate Joker on this record-setting performance. But, since this is an R-rated movie, Reynolds put his usual comedic spin on the post and did so on behalf of many other R-rated movies Joker beat.


Reynolds has been atop the R-rated box office charts for the last three years thanks to the Deadpool franchise. The original 2016 movie held the crown for a few years, and it wasn't until Deadpool 2's PG-13 re-release that the sequel made enough to surpass its predecessor. Now, Reynolds and the Merc with a Mouth will fall to second and third place on this chart as a result of Joker's incredible performance. Reynolds will have to wait for Deadpool 3 with Marvel Studios to try and reclaim this title, which will be tougher as Joker's total continues to climb; projections say it could finish with over $900M worldwide.

With all of the money Joker has made, it is no wonder it's also anticipated to be a wildly profitable film for WB and DC. They made the movie for a relatively low budget by superhero movie standards and will result in a huge return. The latest reports expect Joker to be as profitable for WB as Avengers: Infinity War was for Disney. This will make Joker one of WB's most successful movies in recent memory, and that is before any potential Oscar nominations (or even wins) come its way early next year. And if it does keep this up, then Joker may soon earn congratulatory posts from many more than just Reynolds.
