Rick and Morty showrunner Scott Marder has promised that the show will release a season every year moving forward. Rick and Morty received a 70 episode order in 2018 and still has 50 to go; with 10 episodes per season, the series is look at least five more. Rick and Morty season 6 will finally premiere on September 4 and pick up after the bombshell season 5 finale.
Rick and Morty has grown a cult following for its unapologetic humor and main character’s self-obsessed nihilistic outlook on life, and season 6 is being set up to continue the same chaotic adventures with new foes and challenges. Rick and Morty season 5 left its titular characters with the Citadel of Ricks and Central Finite Curve effectively destroyed by Evil Morty, meaning their adventures could look different in season 6. Without the Central Finite Curve providing other multiverses to retreat to when in trouble, Rick and Morty will have to face the consequences of their actions in their own universe with more limited travel capabilities.
While Rick and Morty has been known to have issues releasing seasons quickly and on time, Marder promises in an interview with Inverse and producer James Siciliano that there will be a season of the show every year from now on. As Rick and Morty season 6 nears its debut, work has already begun on subsequent episodes. Read their comments below.
JS: There’s an unbelievable amount that we have going on. I don't know how much we could talk about, but as far as the production, we have Season 6 coming out, and Season 7 in production. We have the writers’ room for Season 8 going. So that’s about 20 episodes in some form of production, and the new season that we're breaking.
SM: I’ve created a high-class problem for us, but we’ll have a season of the show every year from this point forward.
Although audiences have been frustrated with wait times for new seasons of Rick and Morty, the production team seems to already be delivering on their promise to do better with two seasons currently in production. Rick and Morty has also planned out the release of season 6 more than past seasons, creating a worldwide scavenger hunt for fans to find real-life statues of scenes from the show by collaborating online. While waiting for the new season, viewers were also given The Vindicators web series spin-off and the announcement of Rick and Morty: The Anime, which does not have a release date but will be 10 episodes long.
After years of varying wait times for new Rick and Morty seasons, it is certainly a relief to hear that those drastic gaps will be whittled down. Hopefully, planning out seasons ahead will also make for more interactive marketing, like the scavenger hunt and Rickmobile, and even lead to more spin-off projects. With viewers' favorite scientist and boy sidekick in immediate danger of Wormageddon, a worldwide attack of giant alien worms, Rick and Morty season 6 truly promises to be the start of a new era for the series.
