There are quite a few Marvel movies slated to arrive in theaters in 2024, with seven films between the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony's Spider-Man Universe, and the animated Spider-Verse franchise. While the MCU is the first thing that comes to mind to most moviegoers when it comes to Marvel, some Marvel movies that are not in the MCU Sony's live-action expansion with Spider-Man-related characters release in the coming years, and 2024 will see how well Sony's Marvel universe can sustain itself with lesser known characters. Sony's Spider-Man Universe has released three movies so far, with Tom Hardy's Venom franchise proving itself a success with audiences.
Venom scored big at the box office with $856 million worldwide. Venom: Let There Be Carnage grossed a global total of $506.9 million, significantly less that the original, but solid numbers for a movie released amid the COVID-19 pandemic. On the other hand, Morbius bombed with a measly $167.5 million box office run. 2024 will see if Sony can recapture Venom's success with El Muerto and Madame Web, or if MCU releases such as Captain America: New World Order and Deadpool 3 will take all the money. Sony also has a likely hit in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Here are all Marvel movies releasing in 2024.
El Muerto - January 12, 2024
First up is El Muerto, set for a release on January 12, 2024. The movie's announcement came out of nowhere, with Sony's Cinemacon 2022 presentation surprising attendees with famous singer-turned-actor Bad Bunny as the movie's lead. El Muerto will be the first Latin superhero to headline a Marvel movie, with the character being a super-powered wrestler who first fights against Spider-Man before uniting with the hero to beat the villain El Dorado.
El Muerto has only appeared twice throughout all of Marvel Comics' history, making him a peculiar choice to lead a movie. It appears like Sony's plans may have already backfired, with a recent disappointing El Muerto update from Bad Bunny stating that filming had yet to start, with the actor's rep claiming the project was "at a standstill" and later saying the movie remains in development. Given its January 2024 release and the fact that superhero movies normally shoot one year before their release, it appears that if El Muerto does move forward, it will have to be delayed.
Madame Web - February 16, 2024
Next year currently starts with two Sony Marvel movies, as the ambitious Madame Web swings into theaters for a February 16, 2024, release. The movie has assembled quite an entertaining cast, with the female-led Marvel adventure featuring an all-star ensemble. Madame Web's cast includes Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Emma Roberts, Isabela Merced, and Adam Scott. No roles have been specified at this time, although rumors point to different versions of Madame Web from the comics being in play.
In Marvel Comics, the first Madame Web is Cassandra Webb, a blind and paralyzed elderly woman who has powers that let her access the multiverse. Tahar Rahim's character being spotted with a Spider-Man-like suit on the Madame Web set might hint at a big multiverse event. Madame Web's comic book history, the vast talent of the movie's cast, and the current popularity of the multiverse in the superhero medium might make the project a hit when it premieres next year.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse - March 29, 2024
Initially conceived as two parts of the same movie, the next two entries in Sony's Academy Award-winning animated Spider-Verse movie franchise have been separated. 2023 will see the first of two sequels, with Miles Morales returning for another adventure with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, this June. Following the second movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse releases on March 29, 2024. Not much is known about the trilogy finale of Sony's Spider-Verse franchise at this point, with the studio keeping the movie's plot a secret as it first turns attention to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has shown that even though some Spider-Man variants from the first movie are missing from the sequel, the main trio of Shameik Moore's Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld's Spider-Gwen, and Jake Johnson's Peter B. Parker is back together. While the story of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will only be known after the second film releases, it is expected that the franchise's core trio will band together yet again to deal with the ramifications of the multiverse-wide plot of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Captain America: New World Order - May 3, 2024
Following his journey to becoming Steve Rogers' successor in Disney+'s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie's Captain America: New World Order is slated for a May 3, 2024, release. The movie will be the fourth Captain America solo adventure in the MCU but the first with Mackie's Sam Wilson in the role. The character will have a hard job replacing Chris Evans' super soldier Steve Rogers from the get-go, with a very powerful foe set to be on the new Captain America's way.
While official details about Captain America: New World Order's plot are scarce, it is known that the movie will share some interesting connections to one of the earliest MCU entries, 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Hollywood legend Harrison Ford joins the film as Thunderbolt Ross, taking over the role from the late William Hurt. Ross will be the new President of the United States in the movie and will be accompanied by the return of his daughter Betty, played by Liv Tyler. Tim Blake Nelson rounds up the movie's The Incredible Hulk reunion, playing the main threat to Captain America, the Hulk villain known as the Leader.
