Writer-director James Gunn shares his thoughts on Chris Pratt's emotional Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wrap speech. The upcoming film officially wrapped in May and marks the final outing for the superhero team which made its MCU debut in 2014 with Guardians of the Galaxy. The concluding film in the series will see the end of many franchise favorite characters such as Drax, whose actor Dave Bautista recently announced that the movie will be the last for the beloved character.

Upon its release, Guardians of the Galaxy went on to be praised by both critics and audiences. The film garnered over $770 million at the box office making it the highest grossing superhero film of that year, overtaking both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, prior to release many wondered how well the film would do in theaters due to the public's general unfamiliarity with the characters.

In a recent post to Twitter, Gunn shared details from Pratt's emotional wrap speech for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director responded to a comment from a user who recalled how many people originally thought that Guardians of the Galaxy was an unnecessary entry in the MCU. Gunn shared a link to an article from The Motley Fool, just one of many the director says he was subjected to during the run up of the film's initial release. Gunn explained that he remembered that article specifically because he claimed that during Pratt's "beautiful" wrap speech the actor referenced many articles similar to the one Gunn shared. Guardians of the Galaxy went on to prove all of the naysayers wrong with its impressive critical reception and haul at the box office. Its surpassing Spider-Man and Captain America films, both characters considered two of the more popular superheroes in Marvel's library, just goes to show the quality of Gunn and his cast and crew's work. A sequel was immediately greenlit following the film's success. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was released in 2017 and outperformed its predecessor with over $800 million at the box office.

Although many negative articles by online magazines are used to draw in viewers, the public were generally unaware of the Guardians or their eclectic team prior to release of the film. But it may have been that unfamiliarity that helped Guardians of the Galaxy go on to be one of the most successful films in the MCU. Much of the audiences held no expectations when watching the film, allowing for a broader acceptance of its wide cast of characters and their portrayals. Its lack of ties to the surrounding universe also gave Gunn a lot of creative freedom. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may not capture the magic of the original, however, as a result of Gunn's stellar MCU track record, articles decrying the upcoming final film in the series are nowhere to be seen.
