Zazie Beetz, who played Sophie Dumond in the first Joker movie, is reportedly reprising the character in Joker 2 with Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck. After the massive success of 2019's Joker, Warner Bros. has slowly been trying to make a sequel to the Oscar-nominated film, which got Phoenix an Academy Award for Best Actor. Loosely based on the DC Black Label/Elseworlds-imprint, Joker is a gritty character study of Batman's greatest enemy and examines how he became the Clown Prince of Crime.

After multiple rumblings of a Joker 2 being in the works, Warner Bros. Discovery finally confirmed the rumors that a sequel is in development. Titled Joker: Folie à Deux, the follow-up will feature Phoenix as the iconic DC foe once again, but this time with his famous partner-in-crime. Earlier in 2022, Lady Gaga was reportedly being eyed to portray Harley Quinn in what has been described as a Joker musical. Last week, the news was confirmed that Gaga is officially attached to star as the latest live-action version of Harley.

With production gearing up for a December shoot, Deadline is reporting that a familiar Joker star is returning for the sequel. Beetz, who portrayed Arthur's neighbor Sophie Dumond, is in talks to return in Joker: Folie à Deux alongside Phoenix and Gaga. No plot details for her character's return were given at the time of reporting. Joker: Folie à Deux will be directed by the returning Todd Phillips, who once again co-wrote the script with Scott Silver.

This news comes right after Beetz commented on Joker: Folie à Deux being a musical and even hinted that she may be back for the sequel. So far, plot details have been kept under wraps. However, the film's title, Joker: Folie à Deux, is loosely translated to "shared madness" in French and has been suggested to focus on Arthur and Harley's shared arc. While not confirmed yet, the Joker follow-up is expected to take place in Arkham Asylum heavily.

Given that Harley is set to appear in Joker: Folie à Deux, it will be interesting to see how someone like Sophie reacts to her, if they ever cross paths in the film. At the end of Joker, after Arthur thought they had a relationship, it turned out it was a delusion this whole time. Since Joker never killed Sophie, it will be intriguing to discover what she has been up to this whole time and how she comes in contact again with Arthur. With the movie set for release in 2024, more details will likely emerge sooner rather than later as to how Beetz's Sophie factors into Joker: Folie à Deux.
