The new trailer for Star Trek: Discovery season 5 shows off some of the new characters who will be joining the crew this time around. StarTrek: Discovery is one of the flagship shows for the streaming service Paramount+, which has expanded its new Star Trek universe considerably since the series premiere in 2017 when the platform was called CBS All Access. However, the show is still going strong, continuing to follow the journey of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) a disgraced scientist on the crew of the USS Discovery who has risen through the ranks to become captain of the ship by the end of season 3. The show also stars Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, and Harry Potter alum Jason Isaacs.

Although the premiere date has not been officially announced yet, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is set to begin in early 2023. Fans are waiting with bated breath for the follow-up to the season 4 finale, which saw the crew of the Discovery pulling off an unlikely victory, saving Earth, and convincing the planet to rejoin the Federation, a key foundational element of the entire Star Trek universe. Now that Burnham has had a successful first season as captain, the pressure will likely only mount from there.

Today during a Star Trek presentation at New York Comic Con, Paramount+ debuted a brand-new trailer for Star Trek: Discovery season 5. In addition to teasing some brand-new adventures that Burnham and her crew will experience in the new season, the trailer introduces three new faces to the fold. The first is Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), a new series regular, followed by Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis).

Who Are the New Characters in the Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Trailer?

All three new characters will help shape the new direction of this season, beginning with Rayner, a gruff and commanding Starfleet Captain whose warlike nature clashes with the necessities of peacetime. While he will likely provide conflict from within the team, Moll and L'ak will cause trouble in other ways. The partners are former couriers who have become outlaws, fearlessly following their own agendas that will put them in conflict with the crew of the Discovery.

All three stars have experience in sci-fi/fantasy TV, especially Rennie, who appeared on Netflix's The Umbrella Academy and Jessica Jones. However, Harlow's experience on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Toufexis' on Shadowhunters have allowed them to whet their appetites for the genre before joining Star Trek. Although this new trailer for Star Trek: Discovery was but a brief glimpse of these characters in action, fans will likely be eager to learn more about them as soon as possible.
