The first photos from Pixar's upcoming movie Onward, starring Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, have been released. Arguably the premiere animation studio in all of Hollywood, Pixar is responsible for some of the biggest animated movies of all-time. The studio thrived on original ideas in its earliest years but started to get comfortable with sequels in recent years. This movement gave us the Cars franchise, Finding Dory, the long-awaited Incredibles 2, and soon will be responsible for Toy Story 4 hitting theaters.
After Woody and Buzz make one final adventure, the next outing for Pixar will be Onward, a fantasy adventure written and directed by Dan Scanlon (Monsters University). Details on the project have been difficult to come by beyond this, but Pixar confirmed late last year that the movie will hit theaters in early 2020. This announcement also came with a voice cast headlined by MCU stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, along with Veep's Julia Louis-Dreyfus and The Shape of Water's Octavia Spencer.
With less than a year until release, People has now released the first two images from Pixar's Onward. The pictures show the two elf brothers voiced by Holland and Pratt, as well as their mother, who is voiced by Louis-Dreyfus. The images highlight their elvish designs and how Pixar is fusing the real world with the magical one at the center of the film. The plot for Onward revolves around "two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there."
The mixture of fantasy elements like dragons and elves with traditional designs for cars, clothing, and interiors of houses immediately gives Onward a distinct style to it. The animation looks right in line with Pixar's usual style too, so fans of their past work should be happy. What the photos do not provide us with is the insight into how the brothers interact or their personalities, but Scanlon offered up some of their qualities. For Holland's younger brother character, the goal was to find someone who could capture the shy, awkwardness, and sweetness that he has, while Pratt's older brother character is supposed to be wild and chaotic but also charming.
As great as these photos look, whether or not Onward successfully captured these personalities remains to be seen. Scanlon mentioned that he hopes audiences are "laughing their heads off and crying their eyes out" when they see the film next spring. With the first images now released though, a trailer could realistically not be too far away. The upcoming release of Toy Story 4 could be a perfect time for Disney and Pixar to capitalize on what is expected to be a major box office hit and promote their next film in the process. If that is their plan, then a trailer for Onward could arrive in the next few weeks, but these photos will do until then.
