Here are all of the upcoming Star Wars movies releasing after Obi-Wan Kenobi. Lucasfilm relaunched the Star Wars movie slate in 2015, a few years after the Disney acquisition, and had plans to release a new film every single year. The franchise hit this expectation through 2019, which saw the conclusion of the sequel trilogy with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The end of the Skywalker Saga coincided with the launch of Disney+ and the debut of The Mandalorian, and Lucasfilm's success with the latter release signalled a shift in focus.
The Star Wars movies have taken a backseat in recent years to TV shows as Lucasfilm became a significant force for Disney+ content. Not only did The Mandalorian become the streaming service's flagship original show, but it brought about announcements of spinoffs. This success even saw Disney and Lucasfilm rethink their plans for certain Star Wars movies, such as the long-rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi film. It was confirmed in 2019 that the film was reimaged as a Disney+ series, with Ewan McGregor returning as Obi-Wan and Hayden Christensen returning as Darth Vader. Obi-Wan Kenobi's release in 2022 marked the endpoint for fans who waited more than a decade to see Ewan McGregor's Jedi again in live-action and face off with his former Padawan once more.
While Obi-Wan Kenobi has provided fans of the galaxy far, far away more content on the small screen, there is still intense anticipation for the next Star Wars movie. There are no shortage of rumors and reports about the status of the franchise's plans for the big screen, but little information is officially known about the future. Several films have been stuck in development as Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy reportedly looks for someone to oversee the grand plan. That has only led to the list of confirmed projects continuing to grow. Here is every upcoming Star Wars movie releasing after Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Confirmed Upcoming Star Wars Movie Release Dates
With a franchise as lucrative and popular as Star Wars, Lucasfilm and Disney have planted their flag on some prime release dates years into the future. While Marvel Studios has confirmed and untitled films scheduled through 2024, the Star Wars movie release dates go much further into the future. Lucasfilm has release dates already picked out through 2027. They are currently scheduled to abandon the yearly release format in favor of a bi-yearly plan. After seeing great success with the sequel trilogy and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with December releases, the studio is planning to release its next three films around the Christmas holiday season as well. The confirmed Star Wars movie release dates are:
- December 22, 2023
- December 19, 2025
- December 17, 2027
According to Lucasfilm and Disney's official schedule, the first Star Wars movie releasing after Obi-Wan Kenobi will be Rogue Squadron - but that will change. The film was announced in 2020 and will be directed by Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins. The movie's title and Jenkins' announcement video tease the X-Wing pilot-centric story. Rogue Squadron will focus on a new generation of pilots and push the franchise into the future, which teases a setting potentially after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Despite being in development for a few years and a December 22nd, 2023 release date still attached, it does not seem that Patty Jenkins' Star Wars movie will come out by then. There have been multiple reports of creative differences between Jenkins and Lucasfilm over the movie, which led to Kathleen Kennedy saying in 2022 that the film has been "pushed off to the side for the moment." Considering the fact that Patty Jenkins still working on the script and these comments, it is almost certain Rogue Squadron will not meet its 2023 release date - even if Disney's slate says otherwise.
Star Wars: A Droid Story (Release Date TBC)
Lucasfilm is also developing an animated Star Wars movie for Disney+ that will release Obi-Wan Kenobi. Announced in 2020, Star Wars: A Droid Story will focus on the franchise's most iconic droids: R2-D2 and C-3PO. Plot details are mostly still under wraps at this point, but Kathleen Kennedy teased in the announcement that it will also introduce a new protagonist. The story is also said to be secret held by R2-D2 and C-3PO alone. The creative team for Star Wars: A Droid Story is still a mystery, as is when the animated film will release on Disney+. At this stage, it seems that it will not arrive before 2023.
Taika Waititi's Star Wars Movie (Release Date TBC)
Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie is another upcoming project fans will get to see after Obi-Wan Kenobi. Waititi is co-writing the untitled Star Wars movie with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917) but said in 2022 that he is still working on the story. The director of Thor: Love and Thunder was rumored to have snagged his own Star Wars film for a while after voicing the droid IG-11 and directing The Mandalorian season 1 finale. Despite an indication that it is still in the early stages of development, Kathleen Kennedy indicated that Taika Waititi's film will be the next Star Wars movie to release in theaters - which might mean that his film will take the vacant December 2025 release date on Disney's slate.
