The first True Detective season 4 footage has arrived, revealing Jodie Foster's detective. Known for her Oscar-winning role as FBI agent Clarice Starling in 1991's The Silence of the Lambs, Foster will once again be playing a detective in season 4 of HBO's anthology crime series which has been on hiatus since season 3 aired in 2019. The new season, which is subtitled Night Country and set in Alaska, has cast Foster and former boxer Kali Reis as its two lead detectives and commenced filming last month in Iceland.
Now, a little over a month after True Detective season 4 started filming, the first footage has arrived. In a new sizzle reel highlighting the network's 2023 slate of shows, HBO unveiled the first look at Foster's detective. There is also a look at her co-star, Reis, who will be playing her case partner in the new season. Foster's voice can also be heard at one point in the video as her detective states, "I'm working on this case. These men disappeared 48 hours ago." Watch the video below:
Everything We Know About True Detective: Night Country
True Detective season 4 takes the anthology crime series to the cold and frigid land of Ennis, Alaska which is 150 miles North of the Arctic Circle. There, two detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro (played by Foster and Reis respectively) investigate the sudden disappearance of eight men operating the Tsalal Arctic Research Station. Officially subtitled Night Country, darkness will be an important motif throughout the new season. As revealed by the first episode script, the season begins on December 17 with the last sunset of the year before Alaska's infamous period of pure darkness.
Other than Foster and Reis leading True Detective season 4, the Night Country cast also includes John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc, and Joel D. Montgrand. Like the first three seasons, True Detective: Night Country will presumably consist of eight episodes, with this season written and directed by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Issa López. Moonlight's Barry Jenkins also serves as an executive producer.
With the first True Detective: Night Country footage being unveiled as part of HBO's "Coming Soon In 2023," promo, this is the first confirmation it will be premiering next year. However, the new season may not be "coming soon" per se. With True Detective season 4 having just started filming recently, audiences will likely have to wait until late 2023 for the series to return to screens. Still, the first look at Reis and Foster's detectives is a promising sign that another great season is on the horizon for the gritty detective drama.
