Netflix's The Witcher season 2 adds a new cast member, Dolittle actress Carmel Laniado, for a supporting role, as they prepare to start filming in the UK. The Witcher season 1 premiered on the streamer in December 2019, to relatively good reviews and high audience popularity. Based off the book series of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is the creator, executive producer, and showrunner of the television adaptation. The books have also been adapted into a trilogy of video games, the most recent being Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The Netflix series stars Henry Cavill of Geralt of Rivia, one of the last "Witchers," which are people experimented on to have magic and strength who are trained to kill monsters. At the beginning of the TV series, Geralt is on his own, but he quickly finds himself tangled in a prophecy that involves the show's two other main characters, Ciri and Yennefer. Ciri, played by Freya Allan, is the crown princess of Cintra, has unique powers, and needs to be protected by Geralt as a key part of the prophecy. Anya Chalotra plays Yennefer of Vengerberg, a powerful sorceress who survives a childhood of abuse and mistreatment as she cultivates her powers.

As reported by Deadline, Laniado will be in The Witcher season 2 for at least three episodes. She will be playing a character named "Violet, a young girl whose playful and whimsical demeanour is a front for a smarter and more sadistic character." A relatively new actress, Laniado appeared in the recent film Dolittle, as well as last year's A Christmas Carol miniseries on FX, which starred Guy Pearce. Dolittle didn't do very well at the box office, but that says nothing about Laniado's capabilities as an actor. A Christmas Carol, on the other hand, was well-received as an original, dark take on the classic story.

Filming for The Witcher season 2 is expected to start this month in the UK, with later shooting to occur in Scotland and parts of Eastern Europe. The new season will most likely arrive some time in Fall 2021. As for the plot, we don't know much yet. The timeline is expected to be less complicated than it was in season 1, with the main characters' stories more clearly intertwined. It is also predicted to explain more about Geralt's background and the origin of Witchers.

The Witcher is becoming known for taking risks on newcomers, as Cholatra and Allan were relative unknowns when they were cast. The description of Laniado's role is interesting, and hints at plot points of the upcoming season. Other casting news has been sparse, though there are rumors circulating that Kristofer Hivju, who played Tormund Giantsbane on Game of Thrones, will join the new season in some capacity. With the record-breaking amount of people who streamed the first season, Netflix can label The Witcher a success. Showrunner Hissrich has said she has plans for seven seasons of the show, so keep your fingers crossed that it remains this popular in the coming years.
