Netflix’s Lord of the Flies-Inspired TV Show First Look Images Revealed

Netflix’s Lord of the Flies-inspired TV show first look images have been revealed. The upcoming TV series, known as The Society, has been building momentum over the last few months, in anticipation of its upcoming May release. The series is not to be confused with the in-development female-centric remake of Lord of the Flies.

Originally published in 1954, William Golding’s Lord of the Flies tells the story of a group of preadolescent boys who attempt to form their own society after the plane they are traveling on crash lands near a deserted island in the Pacific Ocean. As life on the island becomes increasingly frightening and difficult, the boys devolve into a somewhat barbaric state and begin to turn on one another. The novel has won numerous awards since its publication, including the 1954 Nobel Prize for literature. It has been adapted into a wide array of stage productions, television dramas, and films.

As it’s been some time since a new version of the acclaimed story has seen the light of day, Netflix is now getting ready to launch their own take on the concept with The Society. Thanks to a press release, we're able to get our first look at the series with a diverse selection of photos, which can be viewed below:

Though the new series is inspired by Lord of the Flies, it charts its own course by seemingly keeping its cast of characters at home in their familiar New England town. Due to mysterious circumstances, a group of teenagers are transported to a replica of their town where none of their parents exist. Struggling to uncover why and how they ended up in this strange place, the teens must form alliances in order to survive when the carefree initial days of fun and recklessness turn to a much more serious focus on the challenges of every day life. The series is executive produced and directed by Mark Webb, who is responsible for some popular film and television titles, including both of the Amazing Spider-Man films, 500 Days of Summer, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and a wide assortment of well known music videos. As previously mentioned, the new 10-episode series will kick off in May on Netflix, but at present, an exact date has not been confirmed.

So far this sounds like an interesting take on Lord of Flies, with an apparent supernatural element that is reminiscent of Lost. The original Lord of the Flies offered a rather cynical take on humanity, so it will be interesting to see how someone like Webb, who has a fair amount of experience with dramas and rom-coms, will handle the concept of morality among a group of stranded, self-organizing teens. All things considered, it’s not hard at all to believe that Netflix could easily have another hit series on their hands if this new society is a strong one.
